AGL internet

The speed of your internet connection depends on a number of factors including:

  • your type of connection, (FTTP, FTTC, FTTN, FTTB, FW or HFC)
  • modem quality
  • in-home cabling
  • modem position in your home
  • distance between your modem and Wi-Fi devices
  • electrical and Wi-Fi channel interference
  • number of devices connected
  • FW (fixed wireless) connections can also be affected by cell congestion, distance from a fixed wireless tower and hot weather or heavy rain.

Check for outages

nbn outages and service issues can also affect your nbn speeds. Check the status of your service by visiting nbn outages and network status.

You can add a Home Phone plan from $10 a month and make unlimited calls anywhere in Australia. You'll need a Home Phone compatible modem. You can purchase a  Netcomm NF20MESH modem when you sign up to your AGL plan online. The minimum cost of this plan is $226 ($10/mth + $216 modem cost).

If you want to bring your own compatible modem or need a Grandstream HT812 VoIP phone adaptor, contact us.

Our plans use VoIP technology, which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Basically, it allows you to make phone calls using your internet connection (just like when you use programs like Skype).

When you make calls with a traditional landline, you’re using a wired connection. With a home phone plan using VoIP, your conversation is transmitted digitally.

If you already have an nbn plan with us you can switch plans once a month for no fee.

Modems and devices

Bringing your own modem

You can bring your own modem (BYO) if your modem is:

  • compatible with the nbn network and your nbn connection type
  • not locked to another internet provider
  • capable of supporting the connection speeds for the plan you choose (otherwise you may experience slower speeds).

If you’re adding a Home Phone plan, contact us if you want to bring your own VoIP compatible modem or need a Grandstream HT812 VoIP phone adaptor.

If you need help connecting your BYO modem, view the setup instructions.

Buying a modem or device from us

Once you’ve chosen an AGL nbn plan and depending on your connection type, you can buy an eero modem or Netcomm modem outright from $216 ($15 standard delivery will apply). Monthly payments over 12 or 24 months are also available at no extra cost.

If you buy a modem on a 12- or 24-month payment plan and cancel early:

  • You'll need to pay your Remaining Device Charges based on the full price of the device, not the discounted price (prorated to the day of cancellation).
  • This will appear as a lump sum on your next bill, together with your monthly nbn plan fee.

Good to know

We do not offer eero devices to customers with Fibre to the Building (FTTB) or Fibre to the Node (FTTN) connection types, or to customers who have added a Home Phone service to their nbn plan. For these customers we offer the Netcomm NF20MESH.

AGL supplied modems are only available for purchase when you sign up to an AGL nbn plan. They can't be purchased separately.

Modems are available depending on your connection type. If you add a home phone service to your plan, you’ll need to choose a VoIP compatible modem such as the Netcomm NF20MESH.

The eero 7 and eero Pro 7 are compatible with:

  • Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)/Fibre
  • Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)
  • Fixed Wireless (FW)
  • Fixed Wireless Plus (FW+)
  • Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial (HCF)

The Netcomm NF20MESH is compatible with:

  • Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)/Fibre
  • Fibre to the Node (FTTN)
  • Fibre to the Building (FTTB)
  • Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)
  • Fixed Wireless (FW)
  • Fixed Wireless Plus (FW+)
  • Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial (HFC)

Fibre upgrade

nbn co is currently rolling out a program in selected areas across Australia so that more customers get access to full fibre.

This means addresses connected to the nbn network via Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), may be eligible to upgrade their connection type to full fibre, also known as Fibre to the Premise (FTTP).²

Upgrading to FTTP will give you access to a more reliable network and higher speed plans, which means you can do more online with less interruptions, including:

  • have multiple people online at the same time
  • work from home and make video calls
  • stream high-definition video (4K)
  • play online games

Are you eligible for a fibre upgrade?

To check your eligibility simply enter your address at the top of the page.

If you’re eligible, we’ll automatically let you know your connection type and if a fibre upgrade is available.

Fibre upgrade installation process

If you order a plan with a fibre upgrade, we’ll arrange an appointment with an nbn technician so they can start the installation process.

Your first appointment usually takes place within 7 days of your order.

You’ll receive an SMS within an hour of your order with all the details of your first appointment and how to reschedule it. If you miss an appointment, you may incur a fee.

Someone over the age of 18 will need to be home at the time.
