Concessions, rebates and grants for NSW residents

As an AGL customer, you may qualify for various concessions administered by AGL on behalf of the NSW State Government.

Eligibility conditions vary, and may change from time to time. Find the latest information below.

NSW Government Low Income Household Rebate

This rebate pays $285 per year (indexed annually on 1 July) or $0.7808 (GST excl) per day towards the cost of electricity in your household. It's paid in instalments through your AGL electricity bill – the exact amount paid on each bill will depend on the number of days in each billing period.

It's designed to assist eligible AGL customers with all household energy costs (gas and electricity), but is applied on the electricity bill only.

Are you eligible?

You'll need one of these concession cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card issued by Centrelink or Department of Veterans' Affairs
  • Centrelink Health Care Card
  • Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card (for recipients of War Widow or War Widower, Totally and Permanently Incapacitated rate or Extreme Disablement Adjustment rate pensions).

A concession can be claimed only if:

  • you are a resident of NSW
  • the energy account is in the name of the concession card holder
  • the supply address is the domestic primary place of residence
  • you are a customer of the retailer, or a long term resident of an on-supplied residential community, or a resident of an on-supplied retirement village, or a resident of an on-supplied strata scheme.

The following cardholders are ineligible:

  • Centrelink Child Disability Healthcare cards
  • Centrelink Foster Care Healthcare cards
  • DVA Dependent and Specific Conditions cards
  • Commonwealth State Seniors cards
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health cards.

NSW Gas Rebate

This rebate pays $110 per year or $0.3014 (GST excl) per day towards your gas bill. It's paid in instalments via your AGL bill – the exact amount of the rebate paid on each bill will depend on the number of days in each billing period.

Are you eligible?

You'll need one of these concession cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card issued by Centrelink or Department of Veterans' Affairs
  • Centrelink Health Care Card
  • Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card (for recipients of War Widow or War Widower, Totally and Permanently Incapacitated rate or Extreme Disablement Adjustment rate pensions)

A concession can only be claimed if:

Life support rebate

If you use a life support machine at home, you may qualify for this concession – even if you claim other rebates like the NSW Government Low Income Household Rebate, the Medical Energy Rebate or the Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) scheme. Rebates are calculated on a daily basis and are applied to each bill.

You don't need a concession card to receive this rebate.

Eligible equipment and rebates

You can receive more than one rebate if you have more than one type of life support machine in your home. Just make sure that all machines prescribed by your doctor are included in the application.

Are you eligible?

To receive this rebate:

  • the account holder or another occupant in your household requires one or more of the eligible medical equipment above to sustain their life
  • you must complete an application form signed by your doctor to verify the need for specific in-house medical equipment.

If you have either a life support machine that is eligible for concession or any other type of machine prescribed by a doctor for life support purposes, please contact AGL 24/7 on 131 245 to add your details to AGL's Life Support Register.

Medical Energy Rebate

This rebate is for eligible customers who can't self-regulate body temperature when exposed to extreme (hot or cold) temperatures. This is common with medical conditions like Parkinson's disease and Multiple Sclerosis.

It pays $285 per year (indexed annually on 1 July) or $0.7808 (GST excl) per day in instalments through your AGL electricity bill. You can receive it in addition to other assistance such as the NSW Government Low Income Household Rebate, the Life Support Rebate and the Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) scheme.

Are you eligible?

To receive this rebate, either the account holder or another person residing at the residence must have an inability to self-regulate body temperature. You need to get a form signed by a medical practitioner who has been treating the patient for at least three months.

You'll also need one of these concession cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card issued by Centrelink or Department of Veterans’ Affairs
  • Centrelink Health Care Card
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card (for recipients of War Widow or War Widower, Totally and Permanently Incapacitated rate or Extreme Disablement Adjustment rate pensions).

Family Energy Rebate

This rebate helps NSW families to pay their electricity bills. It pays $20 or up to $180 annually, depending on your eligibility.

Are you eligible?

If you reside in NSW and were eligible for the Federal Government's Family Tax Benefit A or B at any time during the last financial year, then you may be able to claim this rebate. You must be the primary account holder for your electricity account.

How to apply

Apply for this rebate through the NSW Government's Family Energy Rebate application form. You will need:

  • your Customer Reference Number (CRN)
  • if applicable, your Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) number
  • your recent AGL electricity account containing all relevant billing information.

Energy Accounts Payments Assistance (EAPA) scheme

If you are experiencing a financial crisis, this scheme helps you stay connected to essential energy services. Providing you with a one-off voucher to help pay your bill, it is not available on an ongoing basis.
