Electricity or gas meter upgrades and removals

Need to change, move or remove your meter? Here's how to apply and what to expect.

Apply to change or remove your electricity meter

First, speak to a registered electrician. They’ll tell you what work is needed and whether you or the electrician need to apply directly to your electricity distributor.

If your electrician tells you to apply through us, fill out our  electricity application form (PDF) and email it to AGLNewConns@agl.com.au

For meter removals, please also send proof of ownership with your application. For example, council rates or a Title Search showing the owner’s name.

Fill out the relevant application below and email it to GasNewConns@agl.com.au.

If you’re demolishing the building, the property must be vacant before you apply.

WA customers

Account holder consent required for removals

If you're not the account holder, we'll need to get their permission to proceed with the meter removal. This may delay the process by a few days.

Timeframes

After you’ve applied for a meter change or removal (whether through us or the distributor), we’ll process your application in 2 to 3 business days. If there are any issues, we’ll let you know.

When both AGL and the distributor accept your application, the distributor and/or metering provider will do the meter change or removal.

Electricity meter changes or removals

A standard meter change or removal is usually completed on an agreed date with you, or within 20 business days of us receiving your request.

If the meter change requires interruption of the supply of another customer, it will be completed on an agreed date with you, or within 30 business days of us becoming aware of the need to interrupt another customer’s supply.

If you have life support equipment, an appointment may be required.

Gas meter changes or removals

A standard meter change or removal should be completed on an agreed date with you or within 25 business days of us sending the request to the distributor and/or metering provider.

On the day

On the day of the change or removal, you'll need to make sure that:

  • the site is safe

  • the site is free from rubbish

  • there's clear access to the meter location.

For meter changes, make sure there's nothing preventing installation, like loose switchboards, exposed wires or a point of attachment that's too high or low.

Fees

Meter change and removal fees vary depending on the work and your distributor, so we're unable to provide you with a set fee. The charges from the distributor will pass through to your AGL bill, including any missed appointment fees.

If there are any fees for non-standard work, we'll get in touch before going ahead.
