If you have a low income, you could be eligible for various concessions from the South Australian Government. These concessions are managed by the Department of Human Services (DHS), through ConcessionsSA.

The South Australian Government does not currently offer concessions on electricity or gas for seniors.
In Western Australia, there are no concession rebates available for reticulated natural gas. However, you mat be eligible for other forms of government assistance, like the Hardship Utility Grant Scheme.

You may qualify if you're a NSW resident with an eligible Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card (CSHC) issued from either Services Australia or the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
The Seniors Energy Rebate helps cover the cost of electricity for eligible independent retirees. The rebate is $200 per household, per year.

The NSW Government Low Income Household Rebate (formally known as the Energy Rebate) recently decreased to $285 per year (indexed annually on 1 July) or $0.7808 (GST excl.) per day.
The rebate is paid in instalments through each AGL electricity bill. The exact amount of the rebate paid on each bill will depend on the number of days in each billing period.
The Low Income Household Rebate is intended to assist eligible AGL customers with all their household energy costs (gas and electricity) but is applied on the electricity bill only.

The NSW Government Gas Rebate is $110 per year or $0.3014 (GST excl.) per day and started on 1 July 2025. The rebate is paid in instalments through each AGL gas bill. The exact amount of the rebate paid on each bill will depend on the number of days in each billing period.
The Gas Rebate is intended to assist eligible AGL customers with their household energy and is applied on the gas bill only.

This concession is currently calculated at the rate of 17.5% off energy usage and supply charges minus $0.0823 (GST excl.) per day. It's applied after any AGL discounts or solar credits and is available all year round.
It doesn't apply to the first $171.60 of your electricity bill and is capped at an amount of $589.64 (GST excl.) beginning 1st December 2024.
If the cap of $589.64 (GST excl.) is exceeded, you may apply for additional concession through the Excess Energy Concession rebate. If this is required for your account, we'll send you the required application form.

Customers who are Victorian residents with mains gas and bulk hot water (BHW) services can apply to receive the Winter Gas Concession (WGC) on both services.
The WCG provides 17.5% off your gas energy usage and supply charges minus $0.0593 (GST excl.) per day. It's applied after any AGL discounts and is available from 1 May to 31 October each year.
The concession doesn't apply to the first $62.40 of concession cardholders' winter gas bills and is capped at $386.68 (GST excl.) beginning 1 May 2025.
If the cap of $386.68 (GST excl.) is exceeded, you may be eligible for the Excess Gas Concession rebate. If this applies to your account, we'll provide the required application form.

From 1 July 2025, the Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate is $0.2294 per day (GST excl.) for a total of $92.12 per annum (GST incl.). This rebate is applied as a daily rate on each gas bill. The exact amount of the rebate paid on each bill will depend on the number of days in each billing period.

From 1 July 2017, concessions are subject to annual indexation. This means that the concession rate will either increase in line with a positive indexation rate, or remain at the same level in the event of a zero percentage or negative indexation rate.
After determination of the indexation rate for 2025/2026, the annual energy concession rate from 1 July 2025 will increase to $281.78; the daily rate will therefore be $0.772 (GST exclusive).

The EAPA scheme helps financially disadvantaged people who are having difficulty paying their electricity or gas bill because of a crisis or emergency situation. The scheme ensures people stay connected to essential services during a financial crisis, and is not available on an ongoing basis.

The NSW Government introduced the Family Energy Rebate in 2012. It's specifically designed to help NSW family households pay their electricity bills. You can receive up to $250 depending on eligibility.
Any electricity customer that resides in NSW and who was eligible for the Federal Government's Family Tax Benefit A or B at any time during the last financial year may be eligible for this rebate.

This Scheme helps people in Victoria who can’t pay their utility bills because of short-term financial problems. It’s run by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
You can apply more than once until you reach the cap.

The HEEA scheme provides one-off emergency assistance to low income households suffering a short-term financial crisis (within the past 12 months) that are unable to pay their current electricity and/or reticulated natural gas bills and are at risk of disconnection.

The Emergency Electricity Payment Scheme (EEPS) provides assistance to South Australians who are experiencing significant financial difficulties or are at risk of having their electricity disconnected.
EEPS is only accessible through financial counsellors, who will assess your financial situation before lodging an application.

The Hardship Utility Grant Scheme (HUGS) is a State Government scheme which provides financial assistance to help people in financial hardship pay their water, gas and electricity bills so their supply is not cut off.

The life support concession provides additional financial support to customers who require the use of specific life support machines in their home.
The life support rebate can be received in addition to other assistance such as the NSW Government Low Income Household Rebate, the Medical Energy Rebate and the Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) scheme.
If you have more than one type of life support machine in your home you are eligible to receive more than one rebate. For this to occur, all machines prescribed by the patient's doctor must be included in the application. Rebates are calculated on a daily basis and are applied to each bill.
Customers don't have to be a concession cardholder to be eligible to receive this rebate. The supply address must be the primary place of residence for the person who needs the life support equipment.

How to apply
If you have a life support machine that’s eligible for the rebate or any other type of machine prescribed by a doctor for life support purposes call 131 245.
We’ll register your life support equipment to make sure you’re notified of any energy supply interruptions. Learn more about registering Life support equipment.
When to re-apply
You need to re-apply for the life support rebate every few years. How often depends on if your rebate started before or after 1 July 2024.

The Medical Energy Rebate is for eligible customers who are unable to self-regulate their body temperature when exposed to extreme (hot or cold) temperatures due to certain medical conditions such as Parkinson's disease and Multiple Sclerosis.
The Medical Energy Rebate recently decreased to $285 per year (indexed annually on 1 July 2025) or $0.7808 (GST excl.) per day.

The Medical Cooling Concession provides a 17.5% discount off electricity costs over a six-month period from 1 November to 30 April each year. This is for customers with medical conditions which prevent the body from regulating its own temperature, such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, Motor Neurone Disease, Scleroderma and Lupus.
Customers who are eligible for the Medical Cooling Concession will also receive the Annual Electricity Concession.

The Life Support Concession provides additional financial support to customers who require the use of specific in-home life support machines. For a machine to qualify it must use at least 1,880 kWh per year with (470 kWh per quarter).

The Electricity Life Support Concession Scheme provides financial assistance to seriously ill people who use home-based life support systems (oxygen concentrators or kidney dialysis machines) provided they have been medically assessed in accordance with the eligibility criteria determined by Queensland Health.

The medical cooling and heating concession is available to assist low-income concession cardholders in Queensland who have a medical condition that requires the use of electricity for cooling or heating.
Eligible individuals will be entitled to a concession to assist with increased electricity costs incurred by frequent operation of an air-conditioning unit in order to regulate body temperature.
The concession amount will be paid directly by the Queensland Government in quarterly instalments by direct payment to an eligible recipient's bank account.

The Medical Heating and Cooling Concession assists South Australians on a fixed or low income who have a clinically verified medical condition that requires the frequent use of heating or cooling in the home to stop their condition becoming severely worse.
This concession is $274.85 per year or $0.753 (GST excl.) per day. It's available to eligible applicants in addition to the current energy concession. It's paid directly to customers by the Department of Human Services.
