Reconciliation Action Plan

Our Reconciliation Action Plan builds on our solid foundation of respect for Traditional Custodians and our Purpose, Powering Australian Life.

AGL recognises the First Nations people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we work, and we acknowledge those communities' continuing connections to their lands, waters and cultures. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

We have extended the timeframe of our Innovate RAP in agreement with Reconciliation Australia. We are currently finalising our new RAP in consultation with our First Nations stakeholders, with publication expected in 2026.

Our commitment to reconciliation is not bound by a timeframe and it continues to guide every part of our business through:

Our Reconciliation Action Plan

AGL is strongly committed to contributing to reconciliation with First Nations communities. We have been building relationships and cultural understanding with Traditional Custodians of lands on which we operate for many years.

In July 2023 we launched our second Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, formalising our commitment in a detailed framework that speaks to First Nations engagement and reconciliation, bringing our existing and future diverse work streams together.

As Australia’s leading energy retailer, we have both the responsibility and the opportunity to contribute significantly to Australia’s reconciliation effort by better understanding First Nations cultures and histories; building trusted relationships with the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we operate; and collaborating on opportunities for employment and economic participation.

Uluru Statement from the Heart

AGL supports the invitation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

We thank First Nations people, the original custodians, for taking care of this country for thousands of years and we are excited about what we are yet to learn and what we can achieve together to build a better future.

Our Reconciliation Engagement Network

Our Reconciliation Engagement Network was formed in October 2016 to recognise, respect and raise awareness about First Nations histories and cultures across AGL.

The Network’s aim is to create a safe and inclusive workplace for our First Nations employees and those who are interested in Indigenous affairs, as well as celebrate and recognise significant events and dates through coordinated activations across the year such as NAIDOC Week and National Reconciliation Week.

The Network is supported by employees from across our corporate offices and generations site who are passionate about advocating for reconciliation, cultural engagement and learning.

'Lighting the path forward' by Keisha Leon

We are delighted to share our artwork ‘Lighting the path forward’ by Keisha Leon, a Waanyi and Kalkadoon designer/artist and founder of Leon Design, who uses narratives to reflect her own experiences; and connecting conceptual design with social outcomes, to change the narrative for the future.

‘Lighting the path forward’ depicts AGL’s vision for:

creating pathways to meaningful change and sustainable futures;
advocating voices and values from the top to the bottom. Leading change; and
caring for Country and connecting people in a meaningful and impactful way.

We look from where we have come from and where we are going. Lighting the path to point us in the right direction. The land guides the pathways and connects us together. It is our duty to take the path unknown, be guided and make way for a brighter future.

Community, Careers and Diversity

Cultivating respectful, trusted and meaningful connections with the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we operate is critical to our success. We are committed to engaging proactively with our communities to develop relationships that will increase our cultural understanding and collaborate on opportunities for employment and economic participation. By building strong connections, we listen and learn so we can shape our community engagement approach and create consistency across the organisation when working with local Traditional Custodians and communities.

AGL aspires to make a genuine difference through our partnerships with community organisations. That is why we have partnered with the Stars Foundation, Clontarf Foundation, National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy and Deadly Coders to support First Nations boys and girls to remain engaged at school and complete Year 12, with the aim to improve their education and employment prospects. These programs provide a diverse range of activities to support their students to develop the self-esteem, confidence and life skills they need to successfully participate in school and transition into a positive and independent future.
