Three for Free tips

Making the most of your AGL Three for Free plan

Find tips to help you save on electricity bills with AGL Three for Free, available in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

How does Three for Free work?

With the AGL Three for Free plan, you get free electricity usage up to 24 kWh every day from 11am–2pm. That’s 3 hours every day to run appliances with no usage charge for the first 24 kWh. Usage charges apply after that.

Just note that the daily supply charge and any controlled load charges will still apply.

How to save on bills with Three for Free

To save on this plan, you'll need to regularly shift electricity usage to 11am–2pm and use only up to 24 kWh. The more you shift, the more you’ll save.

If you don’t shift your usage to those 3 hours, or you increase your usage a lot outside that window, you will not lower your bills.

Appliances to run between 11am–2pm

Here are some of the most power-hungry appliances. If you can, run them between 11am–2pm. Remember: only the first 24 kWh are free. After that, usage charges apply.

To estimate the running cost of appliances, we multiplied the power use by the average cost of electricity usage in New South Wales homes on the Endeavour Energy Distribution network, which is around 33 cents per kWh. This is to give an idea only, the actual cost will depend on different factors like the electricity rate when you use the appliance and the appliance model and age.

Examples of shifting usage on the Three for Free plan

See how you could shift usage on the plan to reduce your bills.

Laundry and dishwashing

Alok used to run his washing machine (1 kW, 1-hour cycle) and dishwasher (1.5 kW, 2-hour cycle) in the evening, when usage typically costs around 49c per kWh on the Three for Free plan. Now he does this between 11am–2pm on the three days he works from home.

He cuts his bill by $25.07 a month.

Electric vehicle (EV) charging

Emma used to charge her EV overnight with a home charger (7 kW) when usage typically costs around 38c per kWh on the Three for Free plan. Because Emma works from home, she now tops up her EV for 3 hours every day between 11am–2pm instead of charging from the grid.

She cuts her bill by $236.38 a month.

Important things to know

Just be aware that you may not be able to run every energy-intensive appliance at one time without overloading your home’s circuit.

If you consume excessive or unreasonable amounts of electricity, for something other than personal or household consumption, we may end your plan and move you to a Standard Retail Contract.
