Three for Free tips

Making the most of your AGL Three for Free plan

Find tips to help you save on electricity bills with AGL Three for Free, available in South Australia only.

How does Three for Free work?

With the AGL Three for Free plan, you get free electricity usage from 10am–1pm every day. That’s 3 hours every day to run appliances with no usage charge. Just note that the daily supply charge and any controlled load charges will still apply.

How to save on bills with Three for Free

To save on this plan, you'll need to regularly shift electricity usage to the 10am–1pm window. The more you shift, the more you’ll save.

If you don’t shift your usage to 10am–1pm, or you increase your usage a lot outside that window, you will not lower your bills.

Appliances to run between 10am-1pm

Here are some of the most power-hungry appliances to run 10am–1pm if you can. Use the arrows below the cards to see more.

To estimate the running cost of appliances, we multiplied the power use by the average cost of electricity usage for South Australian homes, which is around 45 cents per kWh. This is to give an idea only, the actual cost will depend on different factors like the electricity rate when you use the appliance and the appliance model and age.

Examples of shifting usage on the Three for Free plan

See how you could shift usage on the plan to reduce your bills.

Laundry and dishwashing

Alok used to run his washing machine (1 kWh model) and dishwasher (1.5 kWh model) in the evening, when usage typically costs around 54c per kWh on the Three for Free plan. Now he does this between 10am–1pm on the three days he works from home.

He cuts his bill by $24.36 a month.

Electric vehicle (EV) charging

Emma used to charge her EV overnight with a home charger (7 kWh) when usage typically costs around 35c per kWh on the Three for Free plan. She starts topping up every day between 10am–1pm instead.

She cuts her bill by $68.60 a month.

Important things to know

Just be aware that you may not be able to run every energy-intensive appliance at one time without overloading your home’s circuit.

If you consume excessive or unreasonable amounts of electricity, for something other than personal or household consumption, we may end your plan and move you to a Standard Retail Contract.
