Liddell future land use and enabling works


AGL is undertaking the Liddell future land use and enabling works project to demolish the former Liddell Power Station and supporting infrastructure and prepare the site for ongoing industrial use. 

About the project

Following the closure of the Liddell Power Station in April 2023, AGL has been rehabilitating the site, following which it will become part of the future Hunter Energy Hub.

Demolition commenced mid-2025, with AGL aiming to recycle over 90% of Liddell’s materials in the decommissioning and demolition process (PDF).

Development status

AGL is progressing the demolition of the former Liddell Power Station and rehabilitation of the site. Development consent was granted for the project on 31 January 2025.

The project consists of the following stages:

Stage 1- Commenced July/August 2025

  • Demolition of Liddell Power Station, Hunter Valley Gas Turbines and associated infrastructure
  • Construction of a borrow pit, access road and asbestos disposal facility containment cells
  • Rerouting of existing dual water supply pipeline
  • Rock crushing associated with Liddell Ash Dam capping works
     

Stage 2: Planned to commence early 2026

  • Liddell Ash Dam ancillary works to manage surface water including works on the Skimmer Dam
     

Stage 3: Planned to commence in 2027 after the completion of LPS demolition works

  • Remediation (as required), recontouring and final landform works.
  • LPS: Following completion of the demolition works the site will be prepared for ongoing industrial use.
  • Borrow pit area and landfill: The borrow pit area and landfill will be rehabilitated to a safe, stable and non-polluting landform.
  • Additional works associated with extraction from the Borrow Pit (up to a total of 12.5 million m3).
  • Works associated with Liddell Ash Dam to maintain the structural integrity of the ash retaining structures.

Community and stakeholder feedback

AGL has undertaken consultation throughout the development application process and will continue engaging with the local community, State and Federal Government and Muswellbrook Shire Council about the project.
