What does carbon neutral mean?

Carbon Neutral means the greenhouse gas emissions associated with an activity - like generating power - are offset. For a product to be considered Carbon Neutral, action must be taken to offset the emissions associated with supplying it to your business.

How carbon neutrality is achieved

A common way to achieve carbon neutrality is through carbon offsetting, which is when organisations buy and retire carbon offsets (sometimes called a ‘carbon credit’) to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions they produce. These offsets are created from initiatives that prevent, reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. Find out more about carbon offsetting.

What is Climate Active certification?

Climate Active is an Australian network of individuals, businesses and organisations that aims to empower Australians to take climate action now and for the future. The Climate Active network is comprised of certified members across a wide range of industries. This Australian government-backed program enables all levels of Australian society to work together to make a difference.

How it works

Use your products

We calculate the greenhouse gas emissions created when your products are supplied and used.

We offset these emissions

We buy and retire carbon credits from carbon offset projects to reduce or remove these emissions. These projects meet the requirements of Climate Active.

Together, we make a difference

Choosing Carbon Neutral supports carbon offset projects in Australia and around the world, so your business can help make a difference.

Let’s look towards tomorrow

We hear you loud and clear, Australia – making a difference matters to your business. And it matters to us, too.

Carbon Neutral is the first step towards making a difference, and it certainly won’t be the last.

Frequently asked questions

When you choose a certified Carbon Neutral product with AGL, you’re helping to support projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Some offset methods include reforestation, land regeneration, or energy efficiency projects that generate carbon offsets.

Many of these projects also provide additional positive environmental and social benefits, including providing a protective habitat for animals and native plants, creating employment opportunities for local communities, helping families financially, reducing pollution or improving health.

We’re excited to support a range of offset projects including the Westmere Regeneration Project in NSW, the Carbon Conscious Project in WA, the BURN Stoves Project in Kenya and the Ceramic Water Purifiers Project in Cambodia.

Any carbon offsets we buy to offset greenhouse gas emissions for our certified Carbon Neutral products meet the integrity requirements under the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard, which is backed by the Australian Government.

We employ a rigorous selection process when it comes to the carbon offsets we purchase. The carbon offsets meet the integrity requirements under the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard to ensure they represent genuine abatement. There are many different offset methodologies, including reforestation, renewable energy or energy efficiency projects that generate carbon offsets. Many of these projects also provide other positive environmental or social benefits.

We have purchased carbon offsets from a selection of projects, including Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) and Gold Standard Verified Emissions Reductions (GSVERs).

To learn more about how carbon offsetting works for our business customers, view our public disclosure statements.

Carbon offsets are units or ‘credits’ that represent reductions or removals of greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere.

A carbon offset unit may be created by undertaking certain projects, which have the effect of removing greenhouse gas from the environment. Each carbon offset unit represents the removal of one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2-e) from the environment.

Carbon offsets are purchased from domestic and international carbon markets and then retired to ensure that the emissions reduction they represent is not double counted. Double counting refers to the same single greenhouse gas emission reduction or removal being counted more than once to show compliance with mitigation targets (possibly across different regulations).

For more information on retiring carbon offsets, view our public disclosure statements.

Your weekly Carbon Neutral contributions will commence the day you opt in. These contributions will be included in your next energy bill.

To opt out of Carbon Neutral on your products, call us on 133 835.

If you switch AGL energy plans or contracts, Carbon Neutral will continue to apply (unless you opt out or move premises).

If you move premises, you can add Carbon Neutral to your AGL energy plan at your new address.

By purchasing a solar, battery, power factor correction or LED lighting solution, your business has already taken a great step toward lowering greenhouse gas emissions by reducing your reliance on grid electricity. With a certified Carbon Neutral product, you can further offset your business’ greenhouse gas emissions produced by activities like product manufacturing, installation, maintenance and end-of-life disposal.

Think of Carbon Neutral as the same energy that you buy today, except the key difference is we offset the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the energy supplied to and used by your business.

Green Energy allows you to nominate a portion of your business' electricity consumption for which we will source the equivalent portion from commercial renewable projects. The cost of Green Energy depends on the amount you choose and how much electricity you use. Green Energy is not available with AGL gas plans.

Building on our history as Australia’s leading private investor in renewable energy, our Climate Transition Action Plan (CTAP) sets out our commitment to our decarbonisation journey.

Our plan commits us to further evolving our energy transition plans:

  • Continue investing in new ways to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in support of rapid decarbonisation.

  • Responsibly transition our energy portfolio, including transitioning from coal-fired power stations to new sources of electricity supply.

  • Be transparent.

We're already on the path to achieving our ambition of being Net Zero for Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and our commitments will ensure we responsively and responsibly harness the power of our customers, community and technology to get there.

1Carbon Neutral will continue to apply if you switch AGL energy plans or contracts, unless you opt out or move premises. If you opt in to Carbon Neutral for solar, batteries, or LED lighting, your contribution cost will depend on the specifics of the system you install (and the associated emissions to be offset).
