Learn more about AGL Solar Savers

A solar FiT is the rate your electricity retailer pays you for any solar energy you feed to the electricity grid. Generally this happens when your home generates more solar than you’re using at the time. It’s measured in cents per kilowatt-hour (c/kWh).

You receive your solar FiT as a credit on your electricity bill. The credit is equal to the solar FiT rate multiplied by the amount of electricity (in kWh) that you export.

It’s because there’s often a surplus of solar energy exported to the grid during the day — this lowers its value.

Providing a higher rate for the first 10 kWh each day is how we reward customers for their exports while also encouraging people to use their own solar energy, which is generally the best way to get value from a solar system.

The key reason is that solar FiTs and electricity rates are based on completely different things.

When you buy electricity from AGL, the price you pay per kWh includes:

  • paying the distributor to maintain the network and deliver the electricity
  • meeting regulatory obligations
  • the wholesale cost of electricity
  • running our operations.

When you export solar, AGL pays you a solar FiT that matches the value of solar to the wholesale electricity market. At the moment, because there is so much rooftop solar flooding the grid during the day, the market value of exported solar has gone down, causing solar FiTs to decrease.

These things make retail electricity prices higher than solar FiTs.

Yes, the AGL Solar Savers plan is designed for customers who have solar panels and export solar energy to the grid.

You must also meet a few other eligibility requirements, including not receiving a government feed‑in tariff. Also, your solar system inverter capacity must not exceed, or exports must be limited to:

  • 10 kW in New South Wales and South Australia
  • 100 kW in Victoria
  • 30 kW in Queensland.

You can, but if you have a battery and often have excess energy to export after powering your home, you may benefit more from our Battery Rewards Plan.
