Get more control over when and how you receive your energy bills.

Monthly billing for electricity and gas, lets you receive your bills in smaller, easier to manage payments. This makes budgeting a breeze through smaller bills and by allowing you to select the time of the month that you'd like to receive it.

Set up monthly billing

Here are the steps to set up monthly billing in My Account:

  1. From your My Account dashboard, select your name in the top right corner, then Account Settings
  2. In the Billing and payments menu, go to Monthly billing and select Edit
  3. Select your account, then choose your preferred bill issue date
  4. Select Switch To Monthly Billing to complete.

From here, you can also cancel monthly billing.

To set up monthly billing in the AGL app, go to the Account tab, Settings, then Monthly Billing.

Change your billing date

With monthly billing, you can change the date that your bills are issued, helping you budget better. Here are the steps to change your billing cycle in My Account:

  1. From your My Account dashboard, select your name in the top right corner, then Account Settings.
  2. In the Billing and payments menu, go to Monthly billing and select Edit.
  3. Next to your monthly billing service, select Change.
  4. Select your preferred date then Change to complete.

Terms and conditions apply. Weekends and public holidays affect our ability to issue your bill on the day requested. Your bill payment due date will be 14 days from and including the day we issue your bill. Estimations will be used where an actual read is not available.

Monthly billing doesn’t impact any direct debit, bill smoothing or payment arrangements you might have in place.

Opt out of monthly billing

For customers with a smart electricity meter, we're rolling out automatic monthly billing to make it easier to keep on top of your electricity usage.

If monthly billing is not for you and you’d prefer to remain on quarterly billing, you can opt out by going to My Account. Here are the steps:

  1. From the select your name in the top right corner, then Account Settings

  2. In the Billing and payments menu, go to Monthly billing and select Edit

  3. Next to your monthly billing service, select Cancel

Monthly billing makes it easier

In addition to making your bills smaller and more manageable, monitoring your usage more regularly also helps you find opportunities to reduce your usage and save money.

Monitoring your usage is easy through the AGL app, or My Account. Smart meter customers will have their usage data available within 24-48 hours.

When you sign up for monthly billing, you'll receive 500 flybuys BONUS POINTS*. Sign up for direct debit and you’ll receive a further 500 flybuys BONUS POINTS.*

How are monthly bills determined

If you have a smart electricity meter that’s remotely read, we use real usage data to work out your monthly bill. While uncommon, if there are issues sending/receiving data from your meter, your bill will still be estimated.

For customers with a basic electricity or gas meter that's read every two to three months, we don’t have actual data to use every time. Instead, we estimate your energy usage on a variety of factors including your historical usage and seasonal activity, then bill you on that figure. When an actual meter reading is completed, we adjust your account as needed. Customers new to AGL won't have historical data so estimates are based on averages of similar customers over the time period.

If you have a basic meter and would like to avoid estimated bills, you can submit your own meter reading in the AGL app or in My Account.

Why do I get estimated bills

Estimated bills occur when we don't receive actual meter read information.

If you have a basic meter that's only read every 2-3 months, any bills where we don't receive actual meter read information will be estimated. These estimates are based on a number of factors including historical usage, seasonal activity, and averages of similar customers over the time period.

Basic meter customers that are due to receive an actual meter read but have received an estimated biill, this could be because the distributor hasn't been able to access your meter. For example, if it's behind a locked gate, indoors with nobody home, or guarded by a dog.

For smart meter customers, you'll only receive an estimated bill if there's been an issue capturing the information from your meter.

*To be eligible for flybuys BONUS POINTS from AGL, you must link your flybuys and AGL residential accounts.
