Requesting a gas meter in New South Wales

Here are the steps to arrange a service line and gas meter or only a meter:

  1. Submitting your application

Complete a residential gas supply request using our new connections platform including the details of your gas plumber.

  2. Processing your application

After your application has been submitted, it will be sent to the distributor for processing. We'll get in contact with you within two business days if we need more information or there's any issues.

We’ll send you an email when the distributor has accepted your application.

If there are any additional changes or there's additional work required, we may need to obtain a quote from the distributor. This may take two additional weeks and you'll be advised about any additional costs and provided with the quote for approval before installation work can continue.

  3. Installation process

When your application is accepted, the distributor will install your meter and service line (they’ll need access to your site).

If you have site access via a gate code you’ll need to contact the distributor to provide this information so they can gain access. To find your distributor, use our distributor lookup tool.

  4. Completion of your service line request

We'll notify you once the service line has been installed.

FAQs

What are the different types of gas meter installations?

There are three types of gas installations that you can apply for:

  1. A mains construction is where there is no existing gas mains available in the street.

  2. A service line installation is where there is no existing gas line connected to the proposed meter location. The service line must be in place prior to a gas meter being installed.

  3. A meter only installation is where there is an existing service line installed, and only the physical meter is required.

How do I know if I need a gas service line?

If you're not sure what your property requires, learn more about our premium new connections or get in touch with our new connections team on 1800 680 430.

How will I know that my work request for a meter installation has been accepted?

We will update you via email once the work request is accepted by your distributor or meter provider. Your site must be accessible for them to carry out the request.

What do I need to do before a Distributor, meter provider or technician visits to install, change or remove my meter?

You'll need to make sure that they can access your site. This means:

  • A clean site, free from rubbish
  • Clear access to the proposed meter location.
  • Unlocked gates.

If your site is not in a satisfactory condition, the distributor, meter provider or technician will attempt to speak to the site contact and advise us of any issues. If we are contacted, we will then notify you.

How long will a gas meter installation take?

AGL does not perform installation of your gas meter, we help to arrange it for your property. Installation is performed by your distributor. You can find your distributor using our distributor lookup tool.

Timelines for installation vary between states.

For NSW customers installing a service line and meter, a standard quote will be provided in 5 business days, and a non-standard quote provided in 10 business days. After you accept the quote, the distributor will determine the time frame for the installation. For meter-only installations, once you have accepted the quote, your gas plumber will advise on an installation time frame.

For VIC customers, it may take up to 30 business days for service lines and an additional three business days for meter installation. If you are requesting a service line installation, this is usually the longest step in the process, due to site and weather conditions. The distributor must install the service line before the meter can be installed.

For QLD customers, it may take up to 20 business days for service lines and an additional three business days for meter installation. If you are requesting a service line installation, this is usually the longest step in the process, due to site and weather conditions. The distributor must install the service line before the meter can be installed.

For SA customers, it may take up to 30 business days for service lines and an additional 3 business days for meter installation. If you are requesting a service line installation, this is usually the longest step in the process, due to site and weather conditions. The distributor must install the service line before the meter can be installed.

For WA customers, mains construction may take up to eight weeks. For service lines, it is three weeks for new build dwellings and one week for existing dwellings.

Will I have to pay any additional charges for my meter request?

We'll contact you if your request attracts any non-standard charges. It's important to know that if your distributor can't access your home or business for any reason at the agreed time, this may incur a penalty fee, which you will be responsible for.
