What is the Consumer Data Right?
The Consumer Data Right (CDR), sometimes called Open Energy, gives electricity energy consumers greater transparency around energy usage and costs. By allowing you to choose to give third parties access to your energy data, the CDR enables you to make informed decisions about your energy service.
Under the CDR, you can permit AGL to share data with accredited third parties on your behalf. The data you share relates to your electricity contract and information about you, your accounts and billing arrangements. We refer to this data as “CDR data”.
For example, you might give a third party permission to access your CDR data via their website or app, so you can better understand how and when you use energy, empowering you to find the right energy deal.
No, it's your choice if you want to use the CDR to share your data with accredited third parties. You can also stop any data-sharing arrangements at any time.
You can share your CDR data with any CDR-accredited third-party organisations.
See list of CDR accredited organisations
The types of data you can share:
- Name and contact details (name, address etc.)
- Organisation profile and contact details (where applicable – business name, address, etc.)
- Account and plan details (for your AGL electricity account)
- Concessions and assistance details (if you have any)
- Payment preferences (how you pay your bill, billing frequency and any scheduled payments)
- Billing payments and history information
- Electricity connection and meter information
- Electricity generation and storage (if you’ve got a solar plan)
- Electricity usage
Name and contact details can include details of the account holder and other individuals associated with the account holder's account.
You can view all your data-sharing arrangements through our online AGL CDR dashboard.
We’ll never share your AGL login details, password or verification code with a third party, and we’ll never ask you to provide a third party with your password.
There are strict protocols that apply to both the collection of CDR data and subsequent use of that data under the Competition and Consumer Act and the CDR Rules.
To request access to your CDR data through third parties, they must be accredited by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The ACCC has set stringent accreditation criteria and privacy and information security standards that must be met before the third party accesses any CDR data. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) also regulates the privacy of CDR data.
No. We will not charge you or an accredited third party when you enter into a data-sharing arrangement. In the future, if any data has a fee attached, we will let you know on the online AGL CDR dashboard.
For residential accounts
Eligible residential customers can share their data through the CDR.
The following customers and accounts cannot currently share CDR data or may have limitations in sharing their CDR data: residents of Western Australia, gas accounts, off-market embedded networks, unmetered supply accounts, AGL Mobile, AGL Internet, and former Powerdirect accounts. Embedded networks are often used in apartment buildings, retirement villages and gated residential communities.
To be eligible to share CDR data, you need to:
- be at least 18 years old
- have an email registered and authenticated by us
- have an eligible, active AGL electricity account
- be the Primary Account Holder or have Authority to Act.
Who can share CDR data?
Primary Account Holder
The Primary Account Holder is the person who is financially responsible for the account (their name is on the bill).
Eligible Primary Account Holders aged 18 or over can share CDR data.
Authority to Act
Where a Primary Account Holder has a Power of Attorney, State Trustee or Court Appointed Authority appointed to assist with their electricity account on their behalf, the Primary Account Holder or the appointed person may assign that individual as an Authority to Act on their account.
If you have an eligible active AGL electricity account with us, but it’s not set up for online access (meaning you don’t have a MyAccount login), you can contact us for help. We’ll be able to validate and verify your contact details if you wish to share your CDR data with an accredited third-party organisation.
How to share data
- Begin at the accredited third party’s website or app. Select the data you want to share and how long you want to share it for. This can be once off or an ongoing arrangement.
- Consent to the accredited third party collecting your CDR data held by us. To do this, they'll direct you back to AGL to verify your identity.
- Verify your identity with a One-Time Password, using the email address registered with your AGL account.
- Once verified, you can choose the accounts you'd like to share your CDR data from. You’ll only see accounts available for data sharing.
How to manage and stop data sharing
You can stop sharing your CDR data at any time, by contacting the accredited third party and withdrawing your consent for them to collect your CDR data. You can also ask us to stop sharing your data.
Note: If you’re already sharing CDR data and want to change how long you share data for, you need to contact the accredited third party.

If you have or are a Power of Attorney, Court-Appointed Authority, or State Trustee who can make certain decisions on a Primary Account Holder’s behalf, you may want to set up the ability to share CDR data for any applicable accounts.
An Authority to Act user and the Primary Account Holder must be at least 18 years old.
To set up or remove an Authority to Act user please contact us.
Authority to Act is only available for Residential customers. For business accounts, a Nominated Representative is required.
For business accounts
Your organisation must assign at least one individual as a Nominated Representative before CDR data can be shared.
Even if your business account has one or more authorised contacts, data cannot be shared until at least one of those contacts or a newly assigned contact is assigned as a Nominated Representative.
We’re not authorised to disclose data for an organisation without a Nominated Representative.
The following customers and accounts cannot currently share CDR data or may have limitations in sharing their CDR data: residents of Western Australia, gas accounts, off-market embedded networks, unmetered supply accounts, AGL Mobile, AGL Internet, and former Powerdirect accounts. Embedded networks are often used in shopping centres, commercial towers and business parks.
Eligible businesses include all business customer types such as Commercial and Industrial, Multisite and Small Business customers.
To share CDR data, your business needs to have:
- an active AGL electricity account
- aggregated usage of less than 5 GWh per year
- a Nominated Representative on the account aged 18 or over, with an email registered and authenticated by AGL.
How we calculate annual usage
We calculate your company’s annual usage at an aggregated level for all accounts linked to your company’s Australian Business Number (ABN) or Australian Company Number (ACN). A contract may include more than one supply address.
If you've been with us for less than 12 months, we’ll use your estimated annual consumption.
Complete the online form Appoint a Nominated Representative for Consumer Data Right (CDR).
We’ll get back to you within five business days to let you know the outcome of the application.
Note that a Nominated Representative also needs to be an authorised contact for your company. If we approve a Nominated Representative and they’re not already listed as an authorised contact, we’ll add them as an authorised contact and they will be able to maintain the business’ account.
My Account
If your business account uses My Account, you can remove an individual as an authorised person, which will remove their account access and remove them as a Nominated Representative for CDR.
To remove someone as a Nominated Representative but keep them as an authorised person, contact us.
AGL for Business
If your business account is in AGL for Business, contact us to remove a Nominated Representative.
Re-assign a Nominated Representative
To re-assign someone who was removed as a Nominated Representative, see how to Appoint a Nominated Representative.
To update a Nominated Representative’s contact or personal information, the Nominated Representative must contact us themselves by calling us on 131 245.
Don’t have My Account access? If your business has an eligible, active AGL electricity account with us, but it’s not set up for online access, you can still share CDR data. Contact us for help.

Troubleshooting and FAQs
You can access CDR via My Account or directly from the CDR dashboard. If you've never used AGL online services and need some help, please contact us.
To log in, enter your registered email, then provide the One-Time Password that we send you.
If the customer details in your AGL account and CDR profile don’t match, your CDR access may be blocked as a security measure. If you’re affected, please contact us to confirm your details.
Didn't receive a One-Time Password?
- Look in your junk or spam folder. If your email service has 'Focused' and 'Other' tabs, check them too.
- Check if your inbox is full - it might not be able to receive emails.
- Make sure you're looking at the right inbox. The One-Time password is sent to the email address used to log into your account.
If none of those tips work, select 'Resend code' on the 'Verify with One-Time Password' page.
If resending your code doesn't work, you can contact us to confirm we sent the email.
If you have an eligible, active AGL account, you can still manage CDR data sharing. Contact us for help.
