Bill Smoothing is a great way to smooth your bills out into even, predictable payments by spreading your estimated yearly energy costs over one annual cycle. This helps reduce the stress of unexpected high bills and makes it easier for households to budget their finances.

For example, if your bills totalled $1200 last year, then your bill smoothing payment would be $100 per month for the annual cycle.

How to set up Bill Smoothing from My Account

It’s easy to set up and you can cancel any time.

  • Log in to My Account and select your service
  • Select your name in the top right corner then ‘Account Settings’
  • Scroll down to Bill Smoothing and select ‘edit’
  • Choose your payment frequency and hit ‘Save’

What to expect when you set up Bill Smoothing

Bill Smoothing lasts for one annual cycle. We’ll send you a review halfway on how your usage is tracking against your payments. You may be eligible for a refund or, if your usage has been significantly over, you can choose to increase your instalments or pay a lump sum.

When you sign up

You’ll receive a welcome pack confirming your instalments and predicted usage for the year ahead.


Your review will include options on how to update your Bill Smoothing plan, like increase or decrease your payments.

When Bill Smoothing ends

We’ll let you know when your Bill Smoothing arrangement has ended. You may be eligible for a refund or, if your usage was over, you’ll need to make a lump sum payment.

Bill Smoothing is available to residential and small business customers who don’t have an overdue amount of more than $500 (inc GST).

Customers who are currently on AGL's Staying Connected Hardship Program or Payment Support Victoria program are not eligible.

If you're a Victorian AGL residential customer experiencing temporary or long-term financial difficulty which impact your ability to pay a gas and/or electricity bill, you're entitled to assistance as part of our Payment Support Victoria program.
