Scheduling battery charging and discharging times

Learn how to schedule charging and discharging times for your battery to make the most of your AGL Battery Rewards Plan.

Why scheduling times for your battery is important

If you’re on a time-of-use tariff, the rate you pay to charge your battery from the grid (or ‘import’ electricity) will vary depending on the time of day.

With the AGL Battery Rewards Plan, you’ll receive extra rewards when you discharge (or ‘export’) electricity from your battery to the grid between 5-9pm.

To make the most of the rewards you may receive as part of this plan, it's critical to schedule your battery correctly by choosing your preferred times to import and export electricity.

The AGL Battery Rewards Plan is separate to the AGL Virtual Power Plant (VPP). However, you can be on the AGL Battery Rewards Plan and also be part of the VPP. Basic Plan Information Documents and Energy Fact Sheets containing key details of the plan are available upon request.

What to expect when scheduling times for your battery

When scheduling charging and discharging times for your battery, the terms used may vary depending on the manufacturer. Terminology can include ‘time-based control', ‘load shifting’, ‘operation mode’ and 'time of use (TOU)’.

Here's an example of the steps to schedule times for your battery:

  1. Using the battery manufacturer's app, locate and select Settings.
  2. Select the option Time-Based Control/Time of Use.
  3. Input your Tariff Profile — you can find this information in your AGL Welcome Pack.
  4. You can then set up the times you wish to charge (or ‘import’) and discharge (or ‘export’) your battery.
  5. Once you've set your preferred times, click Save.

For battery-specific instructions, you can visit your manufacturer’s website.

You're in control of your battery and the responsibility remains with you to ensure your battery is scheduled to make the most of your plan. AGL does not control or schedule your battery as part of the AGL Battery Rewards Plan.

Battery manufacturer information

When your battery is installed, you should receive a manual from your installer. The manual will have instructions on how to choose your preferred times to charge and discharge your battery.

If you don’t receive the instructions or are unsure how to schedule the times for your battery, you can visit your manufacturer’s website or speak to your installer. Alternatively, feel free to email us at batteryrewardsplan@agl.com.au and we will assist you.
