Retired sites

Following the safe closure and decommissioning of our sites, they are retired and rehabilitation begins in line with regulatory approvals.

Responsibly retiring our sites

The safe and efficient closure of our ageing generation assets is essential in achieving AGL’s decarbonisation commitments. In addition, the necessary decommissioning, demolition and rehabilitation of these sites creates a pathway to deliver AGL’s integrated energy hub strategy. We remain committed to working with our community and stakeholders regarding our approach to the closure and rehabilitation of our assets at the end of their operational lives.

Our retired sites

The Camden Gas Project supplied gas to New South Wales from 144 wells from 2001 until closure in August 2023.

The decommissioning of the Camden Gas Project has been characterised by considered closure planning and effective community and stakeholder engagement. The decommissioning processes for both the Rosalind Park Gas Plant and the gas collection wells were conducted with a strong emphasis on effective community and stakeholder engagement, as well as environmental stewardship to mitigate potential environmental impacts. Our workforce was supported with individual transition plans, mental health support, career outplacement services, financial counselling, superannuation talks, and information on retirement.

Following the closure of the Camden Gas Project and the sale of our assets in the Surat basin in March 2025, AGL has ceased operating all upstream gas exploration and production assets.

AGL was widely recognised by community and government stakeholders for the safe and respectful closure of the Liddell Power Station in April 2023 after 52 years of operation. Supporting our Liddell workforce and the local community was a central part of our closure plans, and we delivered on our commitment to have no forced redundancies. Around 100 people (comprising over half of our Liddell employees) transferred to AGL’s Bayswater Power Station in continued employment, and all other employees were supported with individual transition plans, as they elected to retire or seek other opportunities.

Also key to our closure strategy was the establishment of the Liddell ‘Future U Hub’ two years prior closure, which was an on-site centre dedicated to supporting our people plan for their futures. The Liddell Future U Hub prioritised mental health support, with a focus on training that gave our people skills and tools to help manage their wellbeing and mental health during the closure process.
