AGL progresses upgrade at Clover Power Station
AGL has completed the first of two stages of a nearly $50 million upgrade to the Clover Power Station at Mount Beauty, strengthening the capability of the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme.
The project aims to modernise the 80-year-old facility with the latest technologies, supporting a further 80 years of operation as part of Victoria’s largest hydro-electric scheme.
Major Works and Local Impact
Over the past three years, more than 300 predominantly local workers have contributed to upgrading the ageing infrastructure. Key works include:
- Replacement of turbines and generators
- Installation of high-voltage equipment
- Upgraded control systems for both units
This investment has supported economic activity in the Mount Beauty region, with contractors engaging local businesses and services.
Increasing capacity across the scheme
A key outcome of the upgrade is the removal of a historical bottleneck at Clover. Water flow capacity has increased from 120 ML/h to 140 ML/h, supporting additional generation across the scheme.
Once complete, the works are expected to deliver:
- An increase in Clover’s capacity from 29 MW to around 35 MW
- A 14 MW uplift across the Kiewa Scheme
- An increase in West Kiewa capacity from 68 MW to 76 MW
Investing in our Hydro Capacity
AGL operates around 780 MW of hydro capacity across Victoria and New South Wales. The Clover milestone builds on broader investment across the Kiewa Scheme, with stage two works well advanced and commissioning still to come.
