While your air conditioner might not be running during the cooler months, there may still be opportunities to participate in a peak event during winter. Look out for more details on how to get involved.

How it works

AGL’s Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You program is all about helping to ensure there’s enough energy to go around during periods of high demand. These ‘peak events’, as we call them, run for up to two hours and may occur up to eight times during the year.

When it looks likely the electricity grid might need some extra support, we’ll conserve your electricity use by remotely adjusting your air conditioner’s power. The changes are unlikely to compromise your comfort, but they will help to alleviate pressure on the electricity grid.

Here's how it'll work:

  1. Now we’ve installed the smart devices, we’ll let you know via SMS when we’ll be remotely adjusting your air conditioner’s power and how to opt out. If you do wish to opt out, please let us know as soon as possible* if you don’t want to participate. Because your comfort is a priority, your air conditioner’s power will only ever be altered for a maximum of two hours.

  2. After each peak event, we’ll be in touch to ask for feedback about your experience, and tell you your new rewards total and when it will be paid.

*If you wish to opt out of a peak event please let us know as soon as possible, as requests made less than three hours before the start of an event may not be processed.

Connecting to your Wi-Fi

To monitor your air conditioner’s power remotely, we’ve connected your home Wi-Fi network to synchronise the devices during installation.

Your password is securely stored in encrypted form on the device to ensure your personal data remains completely private. We’ll require ongoing access to your Wi-Fi with data usage not expected to exceed 0.5GB per month.

How will I be rewarded?

You’ve received an initial $300 financial incentive for signing up, which will be followed by a $30 reward for each peak event you participate in. You will receive your combined rewards for participation around November 2018 and around April 2019.

You’ll receive your rewards in the form of a pre-loaded Visa gift card, which can be used anywhere Visa is accepted. You can even use it to pay your AGL bill if you’d like.

What happens if I’m eligible for the Managed for You program?

After you've registered for the program and accepted the terms and conditions, we'll be in touch to organise for a certified electrician to visit your home and verify your air-conditioner's compatibility for installation of three smart devices. The first on your switchboard, the second on the external air-conditioning unit and a third remote AC controller near your air conditioner.

If your home is compatible, the electrician will complete the installation of the three devices, including the smart air conditioning control device, at the same time as the home visit. If your air conditioner is compatible, we'll help you set up the smart air conditioner controller app on your smartphone. You will then be sent an information pack with the full details of what to expect during the program.

If your home is not compatible unfortunately you are ineligible to participate, but we will reward you with a $50 Visa gift card to thank you for your expression of interest.


What is the size of the devices?

The Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You program requires the installation of two devices. The device on your air conditioner and the device on your switchboard are both about the size of the palm of your hand. The smart air conditioner controller is slightly larger.


Do I need to sync anything with my smartphone in the Managed for You program?

If your air conditioner is compatible, we'll help you set up the smart air conditioner controller app on your smartphone and connect it to your device. This can be done during the home visit.

For Managed for You EV participants, we can help you set up the ChargeFox electric vehicle management app on your smartphone and connect it to your device during simple to follow instructions. We'll also send details in your welcome email post installation.


Do I need to be home for the device installation in the Managed for You program?

Yes. However, if you are unable to attend then an adult member of the house with your written authority will need to be home during the home visit.


How long will installation take for the Managed for You program?

We suggest you allow up to three hours for the home visit. The compatibility inspection will take approximately 30 minutes, and if we confirm that we can proceed with installation of the devices then this may take up to two and a half hours. We will endeavour to make it as quick as possible.


What WiFi access do you need to monitor my air conditioner?

In the Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You Program, we'll need to monitor your air conditioner's power remotely.

We'll use your home WiFi network to synchronise the devices during installation. The installer will request you enter your password into the device during the home visit, so please ensure you have this handy.


How will you protect my WiFi and personal data in the Managed for You program?

Your password will be securely stored in encrypted form on the devices to ensure your personal data remains completely private. Your password is not accessible by AGL, our hardware provider or the installer.

Data usage will not exceed 0.5GB per month.

How will you let me know you’ll be reducing my air conditioner’s power?

During 31 March 2018 and 31 March 2019, we'll notify Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You participants via SMS when the electricity grid is experiencing high demand, known as a “peak event”.

The SMS will be sent approximately 24 hours before a peak event, and detail the time of the peak event (e.g. Tuesday 4-6pm) when your air conditioner power will be remotely changed – without any action required on your behalf. An SMS will be sent to you at the start and end of the event and will include a post event survey to collect feedback on your experience.

The peak event may be cancelled up to one hour before, but we'll send you a cancellation SMS if that happens.


How will you remotely change my air conditioner settings during a peak event?

In the Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You program, during the specific peak event, AGL will remotely control your air-conditioner by sending a signal to the smart devices which automatically changes your air conditioner power down to 50% of its normal power. To participate, you will need to ensure your Wi-Fi is connected so the devices can remotely change your air conditioner.

At the end of each peak event, we'll send a signal to your air conditioner to change your settings back to manual. Don't worry, we'll make sure your air conditioner is always returned to working as it was before the peak event, and will only control your air conditioner during the set peak event unless you opt out.


What devices will be installed for the Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You program?

We'll install three smart devices: one on your air conditioner and a second on your switchboard so we can remotely manage your air conditioner via your home's WiFi network. A third device, a smart air conditioner controller, will be installed to provide you with pre-cool capability, in case your air conditioner is compatible. This device will also provide us visibility of the temperature and humidity in the room with your designated remote-controlled air conditioner, which will allow us to further understand and optimise your comfort.

Do I have to participate in each peak event in the Peak Energy Rewards program?

No. If you do not want to participate in a specific peak event in the Managed for You program, you can opt out by emailing peakenergyrewards@agl.com.au or calling our customer service number on 1300 025 928 from 8.30am to 6pm AEST Mon – Fri. We'll remove you from that specific event.

For the Managed for You EV program, you can opt out before and during the event via the ChargeFox electric vehicle management app. If you'd like to speak to one of our team for queries or to opt out, call our EV customer service team from 9am to 5pm on 1300 001 515.

Please note you won't receive the participation incentive if you opt out. We encourage you to send these requests as early as possible so that they reach us in time for us to remove the adjustments as quickly as possible. We will endeavour to undertake the changes as soon as we receive notification from you.


I’ve received a notification for a peak event. How can I prepare?

We'll supply you with a remote air conditioner controller which, if compatible with your air conditioner, allows your air conditioner to be remotely controlled via an app on your smartphone, so you can pre-cool your home even if you're out.You can prepare by pre-cooling your house. Simple changes can make a difference, like shutting curtains and doors in the morning on a hot day.

I’m not at home during the peak event time, how can I participate?

You don't need to be at home or for your air conditioner to be operating during a peak event to participate. We would ask you to please indicate that you weren't home in our post event survey. Please note holiday homes do not meet eligibility criteria.

For Managed for You EV participants, you don't need to be at home for the Schneider EVLink Smart Wallbox to be operating during a peak event to participate. You'll still receive your participation incentive unless you actively opt out via ChargeFox app, email or phone.


Who can participate in AGL’s Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You program?

The AGL Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You program is available to existing AGL homeowners in New South Wales with a digital smart meter. Unfortunately, you need to be an existing AGL customer.

You'll also need to have a WiFi connection. You will be requested to enter your WiFi login details into the device during installation as the devices are controlled via WiFi.

In addition, customers will need to have a wall or ducted air conditioning which is less than five years old and is compatible with all three smart devices being installed in your premises. Once you register, we will be able to verify whether your air conditioner is compatible during the home visit.

Participation in the program will not affect your broader AGL electricity plans or rates.


Is participation limited?

Yes. Places in the AGL Solar Exchange trial are limited, and the offer may expire without notice.


Do I need to be an AGL customer to be in the Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You program?

Yes. In the first year.

The AGL Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You program is only available to existing AGL electricity customers with a digital smart meter and who meet all the additional criteria.

The AGL Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You EV program is only available to existing AGL electricity customers with an electric vehicle and who meet all the additional criteria.


I’m not eligible for the Peak Energy Rewards pilot. What can I do to take part?

We're only in our first year of an exciting three-year program, so look out for future opportunities to participate after March 2019. If you aren't eligible because you aren't an AGL customer with a smart meter and don't have a compatible air conditioner, we can explore adding you to future trials if your circumstances or our eligibility requirements change.

What is the AGL Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You program?

The AGL Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You program is a pilot program which is testing new ways to reduce demand on the electricity grid to help ensure there's enough energy for everyone, when it's needed.


Between 31 March 2018 and 31 March 2019, when the electricity grid is experiencing high demand, we'll notify pilot participants that a “peak event” will occur. During each peak event, which will last up to two hours, your air conditioner will be remotely adjusted to run at 50% of its normal power use unless you opt out.

After each peak event, your air conditioner will automatically be returned to your previous power use and in return you'll receive financial rewards.


Why control air conditioners in the Managed for You program?

Air conditioners are one of the home's biggest consumers of electricity which is why we're using them in the first year trial. We're hoping air conditioners will help us understand how we can test new ways of improving the electricity grid's stability in the long term.


How can I opt out of a peak event?

You can opt out from participating in the pilot program, or from any peak event by emailing peakenergyrewards@agl.com.au or phoning customer service on 1300 025 928 between 8.30am and 6pm AEST Monday to Friday.

For customers with an electric vehicle, you can opt out from participating in the pilot program, or from any peak event via the ChargeFox EV charging app. If you'd like to speak to one of our team, you can call our Electric Vehicle team on 1300 001 515 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. We encourage you to send these requests as early as possible so that they reach us in time for us to remove the adjustments as quickly as possible. We will endeavour to undertake the changes as soon as we receive notification from you.


How many peak events will run each year in the Managed for You program?

Each peak event will run up to maximum of two hours and you will need to participate for the full event to be eligible for a reward. There will be a maximum of eight peak events during the first year of the trial.


How can I earn financial rewards in the Managed for You program?

Once you've registered to participate, we've confirmed your eligibility, and installed the devices at your premises, you'll receive an initial $300 financial incentive for signing up.

For Managed for You EV participants, we'll confirm your eligibility and then send our specialist EV installer supplier to install the Schneider EVlink Smart Wallbox at your premises.

For each peak event that you participate in, you'll receive an additional $30 reward. We won't schedule more than eight peak events during the year, so if you participate in every potential peak event you could receive up to $240 in rewards.


How will I receive my Peak Energy Rewards financial reward?

If all devices are installed in your home successfully, we'll send your initial $300 sign up Visa gift card to your listed residential address in April 2018.

For Managed for You EV participants, if the Schneider EVlink Smart Wallbox is installed in your home by our specialist EV installers, we'll send your initial $300 sign up Visa gift card to your listed residential address in or around April 2018.

You will receive confirmation of your final combined Visa gift card incentive amount from participating in the peak events throughout the term in or around November 2018 and April 2019. Details will not be available on your AGL bill.


Can I receive bill credits for my Peak Energy Rewards financial reward?

No. As we're running a pilot program, all incentives will be paid via Visa gift cards in or around November 2018 and April 2019, which can be used anywhere Visa cards are accepted. You can also use your Visa gift card to pay your AGL bill.

How long will the Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You pilot last?

The first year of the AGL Peak Energy Rewards Managed for You program runs from 31 March 2018 until 31 March 2019.


What if I no longer want to participate in the Peak Energy Rewards program?

If you have registered but no longer want to participate in the Peak Energy Rewards program prior to 31 March 2018, you can email peakenergyrewards@agl.com.au.

After your hardware has been installed, you can opt out of the program by emailing peakenergyrewards@agl.com.au or calling AGL 1300 025 928 between 8.30am and 6pm AEST Monday to Friday.

Any devices which we have installed will need to be returned. We'll organise an installer to come to your home to uninstall these.

For participants with an electric vehicle

If you have registered but no longer want to participate in the Peak Energy Rewards program prior to 31 March 2018, you can email ElectricCarPlan@agl.com.au

After your charging station has been installed, you can opt out of the program by emailing ElectricCarPlan@agl.com.au or calling AGL's Electric Vehicle team on 1300 001 515 between 9am and 5pm AEST Monday to Friday. We'll need to organise a time to come and uninstall the Schneider Smart Wallbox as you are no longer a participant.

To opt out of individual events, you can simply notify us via the ChargeFox EV app – we'll send configuration details for the ChargeFox in your welcome pack. Or you can call us at least four hours prior to the event, if it is between 9am and 5pm AEST Monday to Friday.


What happens to the devices if I opt out of the Managed for You program in the first year?

We will need the devices returned. We'll organise an installer to come to your home to uninstall these.


What happens if I move whilst participating in AGL Solar Exchange?

If you're planning to move houses you will need to move to an eligible property with a digital meter installed. If you're moving, please contact us at aglsolarexchange@agl.com.au to update your address and account details.
