Feed-in tariffs quick guide

Sending your solar to the electricity grid

Learn how solar feed-in tariffs work, why they're changing and other smart ways to save.

What's a solar feed-in tariff?

A solar-feed in tariff (FIT) is a credit you receive on your bill when your solar system creates more energy than you need. This extra electricity 'feeds' into the grid and you get paid for it.

Electricity costs vs. solar feed-in tariffs

Your electricity rate is higher than your solar feed-in tariff because they cover different things.

When you send solar to the grid

You’re only paid for the electricity you’re feeding in.

When you buy electricity from the grid

The rate covers more than just energy - like the cost of making electricity and sending it to your home.

Shift electricity usage

Run appliances that use a lot of energy, like aircon, washing machines and dishwashers, during the day when your panels produce power.

Choose a higher solar FiT plan

If you don't use much electricity and send a lot of solar to the grid, a plan that pays more for solar might suit you, like AGL Solar Savers.1

Store solar for later

A solar battery stores extra solar created during the day, so you can use it when the sun’s not shining.

Track energy usage

Use the AGL app to track solar exports and how much electricity you use from the grid.

Compare energy plans

When choosing a plan, check the solar FiT and usage rates to make sure it’s right for you.
