Frequently asked questions about our nbn plans

AGL internet

You can add a Home Phone plan from $10 a month and make unlimited calls anywhere in Australia. You’ll need an AGL supplied TP-Link modem (no BYO modem with Home Phone plan). The minimum cost of this plan is $159 ($10/mth + $149 modem cost).

Our plans use VoIP technology, which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Basically, it allows you to make phone calls using your internet connection (just like when you use programs like Skype).

When you make calls with a traditional landline, you’re using a wired connection. With a home phone plan using VoIP, your conversation is transmitted digitally.

The speed of your internet connection depends on a number of factors including:

  • your type of connection, (FTTP, FTTC, FTTN, FTTB, FW or HFC)
  • modem quality
  • in-home cabling
  • distance between your modem and Wi-Fi devices
  • electrical and Wi-Fi channel interference
  • number of devices connected.
  • FW (fixed wireless) connections can also be affected by cell congestion, distance from a fixed wireless tower and hot weather or heavy rain.

Check for outages

nbn outages and service issues can also affect your nbn speeds. Check the status of your service by visiting nbn outages and network status.

Modems and devices

Once you’ve chosen an AGL nbn plan and depending on your connection type, you can buy an eero modem or eero modem pack outright from $210 or a TP-Link modem outright for $149. Monthly payments over 12 or 24 months are also available at no extra cost. View Device Payment Plan terms.

AGL supplied modems are only available for purchase when you sign up to an AGL nbn plan. They can't be purchased separately.

Modems are available depending on your plan and connection type. If you’ve added a home phone service to your plan, you’ll receive a TP-Link modem.

Fibre upgrade

nbn Co is currently rolling out a program in selected areas across Australia so that more customers get access to full fibre.

This means addresses connected to the nbn network via Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), may be eligible to upgrade their connection type to full fibre, also known as Fibre to the Premise (FTTP).

Upgrading to FTTP will give you access to a more reliable network and higher speed plans, which means you can do more online with less interruptions, including:

  • have multiple people online at the same time
  • work from home and make video calls
  • stream high-definition video (4K)
  • play online games

Are you eligible for a fibre upgrade?

To check your eligibility simply enter your address at the top of the page.

If you’re eligible, we’ll automatically let you know your connection type and if a fibre upgrade is available.

Fibre upgrade installation process

If you order a plan with a fibre upgrade, we’ll arrange an appointment with an nbn technician so they can start the installation process.

Your first appointment usually takes place within 7 days of your order.

You’ll receive an SMS within an hour of your order with all the details of your first appointment and how to reschedule it. If you miss an appointment, you may incur a fee.

Someone over the age of 18 will need to be home at the time.

Learn more about the installation process.

nbn Co may choose to charge a $220 cancellation/downgrade fee if:

  • you downgrade to a plan with speeds below our Home Fast plan within 12 months.
  • you cancel your nbn connection within 12 months including, for example, moving house.

Learn more in schedule 2 of our customer terms.

For details on how to activate and order an eSIM visit eSIM at AGL.

Activate your AGL physical SIM card

Your AGL SIM card will be sent within 2 business days in standard mail. It can take 5-10 business days for it to arrive depending on your location. If it doesn’t arrive after 2 weeks, please get in touch.

If you’ve ordered a new mobile number with your AGL service, you don’t need to activate your SIM, we’ll activate it for you. All you need to do is insert your new AGL SIM card into your mobile device. Activation usually happens on the day it arrives, but it can take 1-2 business days after arrival. We’ll send you an SMS confirmation once it’s activated.

If you’re keeping your existing number, log into AGL MyAccount when your SIM arrives and follow the prompts to activate your service. Activation usually happens within 1 hour, but can take 1-2 business days.

IMPORTANT: Keep your old SIM card in your phone until it stops working. That's when you'll know your new SIM is ready for use.

For your phone to be compatible with an AGL mobile SIM plan make sure:

  • Your phone is unlocked
To be compatible for AGL SIM plans, you’ll need a phone that works with the Optus Network and isn’t locked to another network.

  • Your phone takes a physical SIM or eSIM

We offer the choice of either a physical SIM card or an eSIM. The only way to order an eSIM is to contact us.

Otherwise, you can order a physical SIM card online. This will be a multi-fit SIM card, which fits most standard phones.

Carefully snap out the SIM card to fit either a standard, micro or nano SIM. To find out which size SIM card your phone needs, refer to the instruction manual for your phone or contact the manufacturer.

  • To access 5G, you'll also need:
    • a 5G compatible device.
    • to be in a 5G coverage area (when you aren’t in a 5G coverage area, your device will access the 4G Plus network as a backup.) Check coverage.

International calls may be included in your AGL mobile SIM only plan. For details on rates and charges, view your plan's Critical Information Summary (CIS) and our International Call Rates.

eSIM is the latest in SIM technology. It’s like an electronic SIM card built directly into compatible phones.

There are many benefits to eSIM:

Fast activation

No more waiting around for a physical SIM to arrive. Scan the QR code in your welcome email and follow the prompts to activate your eSIM. It’s that easy.

Two numbers. One phone.

Depending on your phone’s capabilities, you can set up two numbers on one phone. For example, you can choose to have one number for work and one for personal use.

Kinder to the planet

eSIMs use less plastic and they don’t need to be delivered, making them a more responsible choice with less impact on the planet.
