How much could solar save you?

To illustrate how much you could expect to benefit from getting solar, the table below outlines an estimated average payback period and bill savings you may receive based on three common solar system sizes.

Savings will depend on your household’s energy usage during the day. In this table, an average household consumption of 24kWh per day has been used. To see how this compares with your household consumption, refer to the "Average daily usage" section of your latest electricity bill for an amount in kWh.

Sample system size Average system cost Estimated bill savings Estimated payback period
3kW $3,760 - $4,480 Low range: $430
High range: $816
Low range: 10.4 Yrs
High range: 4.6 Yrs
6kW $5,000 - $6,120 Low range: $861
High range: $1,633
Low range: 7.1 Yrs
High range: 3.0 Yrs
10kW $8,900 - $10,210 Low range: $1,291
High range: $2,449
Low range: 7.9 Yrs
High range: 3.6 Yrs

The information provided in this table is general in nature. For information that applies to your individual circumstances, request a call back from one of our third party solar providers.

We have used the below to calculate an estimated range for bill savings and system ROI:

  • Average grid electricity tariffs is based on AGL’s standing offer as at March 2023 which could have a variance of up to 30% depending on your distributor patch in VIC, and up to 10% in NSW
  • Feed-in tariffs based on AGL’s standard retailer Feed-in Tariff as at March 2023
  • System cost estimates are derived from Solar Choice state pricing figures based on Basic and Premium systems, correct as of March 2023

Assumptions based on:

  • PSH annual averages by locale taken form 'Australian Solar Energy Society 2006'
  • Maximum offset during solar self-consumption of 90% (allowing for load peaks)
  • Typical household energy usage taken form CSIRO 2012/13
  • No seasonal variance in load consumption
  • No Inverter clipping of the array output
  • Roof angle of 30 degrees, north facing
  • The calculation outlined in the table does not allow for additional self consumption that a solar battery would offer
  • Panel efficiencies are assumed to not be affected by soiling by more than 5%

"HIGH" range based on System efficiency 80%, Solar Self-Consumption 90%. "LOW" range based on System efficiency 75%, Solar Self-Consumption 30%

If your electricity usage is significantly higher than 24kWh per day, you may see a more efficient payback period with a larger sized system:

  • A low range estimates that you are not usually home during the day and 30% of solar generation is used
  • A high range estimates that you are mostly home during the day and 90% of solar generation is used
The real cost of running your home appliances

Do you stop and think about how much your home appliances will cost to run once they're plugged in?
