Virtual Power Plant

Power your community with our Virtual Power Plant

Become part of a growing network of solar batteries helping to create a cleaner energy future.

What's a Virtual Power Plant?

A Virtual Power Plant, or VPP for short, is a network of connected solar batteries. These batteries can be coordinated to work together, just like a power plant.

When combined, the energy drawn from each battery can provide a large bank of controllable solar energy. This energy can help stabilise the electricity grid and reduce reliance on coal power.

Save on batteries and bundles

Get up to $1,000 off upfront costs when you buy a new solar battery or solar battery bundle through us or one of our third-party installers.

Get rewarded

Already have a solar battery you'd like to connect? We'll give you $100 for signing up and $45 quarterly credits on your bill, if your battery's eligible to connect.

Help the environment

On top of supporting your community, you'll be helping to build a cleaner, more reliable energy system for the future. That's better for the environment, and better for you.

How our VPP works

When you sign up to our VPP we’ll add it right onto your AGL electricity plan, or help you make the switch if you're not with us already. Connection is wireless, so there's no installation.

We'll manage your solar battery remotely based on the best way we think we can help take pressure off the grid.

You can rest easy knowing you'll always have enough energy for your home, and you'll be helping to support the energy needs of your community.

We'll occasionally manage your solar battery. This could mean small increases to your bill – but never more than $50 (GST incl.) every 12 months.

Sometimes we'll discharge energy from your solar battery to power your home. Any leftover energy will be fed into the grid. You'll earn the solar feed-in tariff on your next bill.

Other times, we'll charge it from either your solar system or the grid. If it's charged from the grid, you'll pay your normal grid rate. There might also be times when we hold your solar battery’s charge steady.

Am I eligible?

We'd love you to join our VPP. You're eligible if you:

  • have a reliable and ongoing internet connection via ethernet or Wi-Fi
  • have or are buying an operating solar system as part of a solar battery bundle
  • have or are buying a compatible Tesla Powerwall, Sungrow High Voltage Battery, SolarEdge Energy Bank or LG Home Battery with a compatible SolarEdge inverter
  • aren't already part of a Virtual Power Plant, or are able to switch
  • have a smart meter installed at your premise or agree to have one installed. Smart meters are digital interval billing meters that measure electricity consumption in a home.

Got questions? We have answers.

There are no lock-in contracts, so you're free to switch plans anytime. Though you'll need to stay on an AGL electricity plan to connect to our VPP.

You can leave our VPP whenever it suits you, though we'll be sad to see you go.

If you bring your own battery to our VPP, there are no exit fees.

If you buy a solar battery or solar battery bundle and choose to leave our VPP within five years, you'll have to pay back the $1,000 you got off the upfront cost in proportion to how much of your five year membership has transpired (pro-rata).

The solar battery and inverters sold as part of our VPP come with a manufacturer’s express warranty that participating in our VPP won’t void. Each manufacturer warranty deals with VPP participation differently, so if you bring your own solar battery we encourage you to read your solar battery warranty for guidance. Contact our solar battery experts on 1300 447 465 if you have any questions.

Overall, we would expect your solar battery to reduce your electricity bills over time. Contact our solar battery experts on 1300 447 465 for help calculating your savings.

There is no fee to be part of our VPP.
