AGL Virtual Power Plant

Connect your existing solar battery to our Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and become part of a growing network of home solar batteries.

Your solar battery will work with others to help take pressure off the electricity grid when needed - like on days when there’s high energy demand. This way, you'll help support energy reliability.

To say thanks, you'll earn credits on your AGL electricity bill.

Why sign up to our VPP?

It works as an add-on to an AGL electricity plan, so there’s no installation or software required.

Get up to $280 in bill credits

You’ll get a $45 quarterly credit and a one-off $100 sign-up bonus towards your AGL electricity bill over your first 12 months. Then, if you stay on our VPP beyond 12 months, you’ll continue to get $45 quarterly credits.

That's on top of any other benefits your plan offers, and any solar feed-in tariff you get when you supply energy back to the grid.

Help out the network

Our VPP is helping to build a more reliable energy system for the future.

Get peace of mind with your power

We'll occasionally manage your solar battery. This could mean increases to your bill - but never more than $50 (GST incl.) every 12 months. Plus, we'll always ensure there's enough energy left to help power your home.

Monitor your power and bill

Check the performance of your solar and battery system, and keep an eye on your energy bill - wherever you are. All in the AGL App or My Account

Am I eligible to join?

You can join our VPP if you:

  • live in NSW, QLD, SA or VIC
    • have a compatible Tesla Powerwall, SolarEdge Energy Bank or LG Home Battery with a compatible SolarEdge inverter
    • have an operating solar system, and a reliable and ongoing internet connection via ethernet or Wi-Fi
    • aren’t already part of a Virtual Power Plant
    • have an electricity plan with us or are ready to make the switch
    • have a smart meter installed at your premise or agree to have one installed. Smart meters are digital interval billing meters that measure electricity consumption in a home.

FAQs

A Virtual Power Plant, or VPP for short, is sometimes used to refer to a network of connected solar batteries that can be managed as one.

The idea is that individual solar batteries can be coordinated, and in doing so become a pop-up power plant. So small amounts of energy stored in individual solar batteries can become a large amount of controllable energy. This can help stabilise the electricity grid and contribute to making energy more affordable in the future.

How your solar battery is remotely managed depends on the circumstances at the time. It's based on the best way we think can help take pressure off the grid.

Sometimes we’ll discharge energy from your solar battery and power your home. Any leftover energy will be supplied to the grid and you’ll receive your feed-in tariff as per your AGL electricity plan.

Other times, we’ll either charge your solar battery from your solar system, or charge it from the grid (and you’ll pay your usual grid rate). There may also be times when we just hold your solar battery’s charge steady.

Your solar battery has inbuilt software that allows us to talk to it in real-time. There are no wires or physical connections.

You won't need to install any additional hardware. Providing you have a compatible Tesla or LG Energy Solutions solar battery, AGL's Virtual Power Plant can be added on to any AGL electricity plan.

When you supply energy back to the grid, you’ll continue to receive your feed-in tariff as per your AGL electricity plan.

You're free to switch your electricity plan at any time as there are no lock-in contracts. However, you must remain on an AGL electricity plan in order to connect to our Virtual Power Plant.

We’re not quite ready to sign up all solar batteries. Right now, we can connect with Tesla Powerwall, SolarEdge Energy Bank or LG Home Battery with a compatible SolarEdge inverter.

Let us know if you have a different solar battery or inverter type and we'll look to include it in our VPP in the future. Email us anytime at batterysupport@agl.com.au.
