How Green Energy works

When you include Green Energy with your AGL plan, the equivalent of your home electricity use is matched with GreenPower accredited renewable electricity and added to the grid.

It's a simple way to support Australia's renewable energy future while getting the same reliable grid electricity at home.

Green Energy and GreenPower FAQs

Green Energy is an AGL product accredited under the national GreenPower program. The GreenPower program accredits projects that produce electricity from eligible renewable energy sources. GreenPower accredited energy is additional to the Commonwealth Government's Renewable Power Percentage, encouraging investment in commercial renewable energy projects.

To match your electricity use with energy from GreenPower accredited Australian renewable electricity generators, we buy and voluntarily surrender Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGSs) on your behalf. More demand for renewable electricity certificates can then help increase overall demand for renewable electricity generation in Australia.

To remove Green Energy from your plan, call us on 131 245 Monday to Friday, 8am-7pm AEST/AEDT. Removing Green Energy may change your existing electricity plan, including pricing.

No. You'll still receive the same reliable grid electricity.

The GreenPower program is audited to ensure that:

  • renewable electricity is generated from accredited Australian projects that meet strict government standards.
  • all GreenPower sales are independently audited to ensure your electricity use is matched with accredited renewable electricity.

As of 1 July 2026, you can apply to use the GreenPower logo on your marketing and business materials via the GreenPower program.

Yes. Green Energy is an easy way to support renewable electricity even if you can't install solar.

When you choose Green Energy, we buy and voluntarily surrender Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs) on your behalf. An LGC is created for every 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity generated by an eligible power station.

By paying a little extra, you're supporting the renewable electricity transition.
