Learn more about comparing electricity and gas plans

The percentages show how each AGL electricity plan compares to the government-set benchmark price. This benchmark is the reference price in NSW, SA and parts of Queensland, and the Victorian Default Offer (VDO) in Victoria.

The benchmark sets the maximum price for standing electricity offers and is used as a reference point to help you compare market offers like our electricity plans. It doesn’t apply to gas plans.

For example, an electricity plan listed as ‘X% less than the reference price or VDO’ means that a representative customer in your area would pay that percentage less than the benchmark over a year.

It’s a quick way to compare plans — just keep in mind that your actual usage patterns and costs may differ from the representative customer used to calculate the percentage.

Electricity tariffs and rates

For electricity, you’ll either be on a single-rate tariff or a time-of-use tariff, which are different ways of charging for electricity.

On a single-rate tariff, your rate for using electricity is the same whatever the time of day. This rate is called a ‘General usage charge’ and is measured in cents per kilowatt hour (c/kWh).

On a time-of-use tariff, your rates change at different times of day where there is more or less demand for electricity. These are called Peak, Off-peak or Shoulder rates and are also measured in c/kWh.

Plans like AGL Three for Free or AGL Night Saver EV also have special rates at specific times of day, and you'll find these in your electricity rates.

Supply charges are a fixed daily fee for being connected to the energy network, regardless of how much energy you use or what tariff you’re on.

Gas tariffs and rates

For gas, you’ll have a daily supply charge for being connected to the energy network.

Your rates for using gas are called general usage charges, typically measured in cents per megajoule (c/MJ). Usage charges are often separated into ‘blocks’, where the rate per unit changes (often decreasing) as more gas is used. Usage charges may also have seasonal variations in some areas.

When comparing plans, consider:

Cost estimates and the percentage difference from the reference price (electricity plans only)

These estimates are calculated using AGL’s rates for a representative customer in your area and comparing them with the government-set benchmark price.

Your own usage patterns

Because the reference price and cost estimates are based on a representative electricity customer, your actual costs may differ depending on how much electricity you use and when you use it.

Energy rates

These are the supply and usage charges. They’ll help you understand what you’ll pay day to day.

Solar feed-in tariffs

If you want to get paid for exporting solar to the grid, check the plan’s solar feed-in tariff, which is the rate per kWh you’ll receive for exporting solar energy.
