Learn more about AGL Three for Free

You need a digital meter (also known as smart meter, interval meter or comms meter) to sign up to AGL Three for Free. This is so we can accurately measure your electricity usage during the 11am–2pm window and make sure you’re not charged for the first 24 kWh per day.

If you don’t have a digital meter and want to sign up to AGL Three for Free, you can arrange to have one installed. In most cases, this meter upgrade is free and will take around 15 business days. Please note that if you upgrade to a digital meter, your local electricity distributor may update your property's network tariff. This could change the tariff type you receive from AGL, which impacts the rates you pay outside of the 11am–2pm window.

Up to 24 kWh during the 3-hour window, every day. Whether you'd ever hit that cap depends on your appliances, whether you have solar or a battery, and how much usage you can shift. You can review your usage patterns in the AGL app and My Account to see whether this plan suits your household before switching.

Yes, outside of 11am–2pm, the AGL Three for Free plan has higher electricity rates than some other AGL plans.

Compared to some other AGL plans, Three for Free has:

  • a slightly higher daily supply charge
  • a slightly higher electricity usage rate outside of the 11am–2pm window.

So, if you can shift a good chunk of your electricity use to 11am–2pm, the plan can deliver strong savings for you. But if most of your usage happens at other times, you may benefit more from a different AGL plan with lower supply and usage charges.

Compare our plans and their charges.

AGL Three for Free can be a great fit if your household can shift electricity use to 11am–2pm.

For example, if you’re able to run appliances, or schedule them to run between 11am–2pm. Appliances like washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, vacuuming, kitchen appliances or EV charging. Find tips on shifting electricity usage.

If you have a small solar system where you sometimes need to draw from the grid during the day, the 11am–2pm period can help reduce those daytime electricity costs.

No, AGL Three for Free is a market offer from AGL, offering 3 hours of free electricity usage each day (11am–2pm).¹ It’s not mandated by the government.

The Solar Sharer Offer is a federal government initiative that will require all energy retailers in certain regions to offer households 3 hours of free daytime electricity usage, starting July 2026.

Yes, having a solar battery with AGL Three for Free can be a great way to save on bills. By charging your battery from the grid for a 0c/kWh usage charge (up to 24 kWh)1 between 11am–2pm and using your stored energy at times when electricity is usually expensive (like mornings and evenings), you can lower your bills substantially.

If your solar battery often has excess energy between 5–9pm, you may be able to export this to the grid to get a feed-in tariff, or you may want to consider our Battery Rewards Plan.
