How does AGL Offsite Solar work?

AGL owns and manages a commercial-scale solar system in Wagga Wagga, which produces solar energy.

You pay an AGL Offsite Solar subscription fee and receive solar generation credits on your AGL electricity bill. These credits are based on the amount of solar energy produced by the equivalent of a 250 watt solar panel at the Wagga Wagga site.

Your on-bill credits reflect how much energy the physical solar system produces, and is naturally affected by weather and seasonality. For example, AGL Offsite Solar customers will earn more generation credits on days with high UV levels, like sunny summer days, as these are the periods in which the offsite solar system generates more energy.

It’s important to know that you don’t use the solar energy produced by the offsite solar system as part of the AGL Offsite Solar subscription – you simply earn solar generation credits that can help offset your AGL electricity bill.

A subscription also doesn’t entitle you to an ownership stake in the offsite solar system. The system continues to be owned and managed by AGL, so you can enjoy access to some of the benefits of solar without the long-term commitment of owning or installing panels.

Do I use solar energy with AGL Offsite Solar?

No. AGL Offsite Solar gives you access to solar generation credits, which are calculated based on the solar energy produced by a solar system that is installed offsite rather than on your own roof. AGL Offsite Solar does not provide you with access to solar energy.

Where is the offsite solar system?

The solar system used as part of the AGL Offsite Solar pilot is in Wagga Wagga, NSW. This site was chosen due to its high solar irradiation levels, which is optimal for solar energy production.

Is AGL Offsite Solar an electricity plan?

No. AGL Offsite Solar is an add-on (ancillary product) to an AGL electricity plan. You will need to be on an eligible AGL electricity plan such as AGL Savers or AGL Essentials in order to sign up to AGL Offsite Solar

Not an AGL electricity customer? You can sign up to AGL Offsite Solar with any AGL electricity plan by chatting to us online or speaking to an energy expert on the phone. Alternatively, you can sign up to AGL Offsite Solar and AGL Savers online in just 5 minutes.

Is the offer limited?

Yes. The number of places available in the AGL Offsite Solar pilot is limited. This offer is subject to change or expire without notice.

Do I need to change my meter / switchboard?

No. AGL Offsite Solar is a simple add-on to your AGL electricity plan and no hardware or metering changes are involved.

Do I need to pay any maintenance and installation costs?

No. AGL will maintain the offsite solar system so it works at its best and you don’t need to worry about any maintenance costs. AGL also owns the offsite solar system, so there are no installation costs for you.

Does it matter what time of the day I use my electricity?

One of the benefits of AGL Offsite Solar is that it doesn’t matter what time of day you use electricity. Your bill will reflect a solar generation credit relative to your AGL Offsite Solar subscription, irrespective of how much energy is used in your home.

How much can I save overall?

Whether AGL Offsite Solar can help you save on your AGL electricity bill depends on a number of factors.

  • How many solar generation credits you receive, based on how much solar energy the physical offsite solar system in Wagga Wagga generates.
  • How many years you remain on AGL Offsite Solar and how many annual loyalty bonus credits you receive during that time. Please note that the $1 a day subscription fee you pay in your first year is non-refundable if you choose to exit AGL Offsite Solar. If you leave the AGL Offsite Solar trial within 365 days you’ll only pay a subscription fee for the days you participated, up to a total cost of $365.
  • Your underlying energy usage and tariffs, and whether this changes during your time on AGL Offsite Solar.

You should consider your personal circumstances when determining whether AGL Offsite Solar is right for you.

Is AGL Offsite Solar or rooftop solar better for me?

AGL Offsite Solar may be the right solution for you if you’re a renter, live in an apartment or have a roof that is unsuitable for your own rooftop solar system.

Roof size, strength, orientation and pitch, as well as shading, are important factors when determining if a rooftop solar system can be installed, and not everyone has the right roof.

A physical rooftop installation may be a better fit if you own your own roof, it’s suitable for a solar installation, and you do not plan on moving homes before you’ve paid off your upfront investment in the system.

Call or chat online to an AGL energy expert anytime to see if AGL Offsite Solar is the right solar solution for you.

Who can get AGL Offsite Solar?

AGL Offsite Solar is only available to NSW, VIC, QLD and SA residential customers and you must be a current AGL electricity customer, or willing to make the switch.

If you move to a state outside of NSW, VIC, QLD or SA you will not be eligible to continue with AGL Offsite Solar.

AGL Offsite Solar is designed for customers who can’t install a rooftop solar system.

Can I change electricity plans while participating in the AGL Offsite Solar pilot?

Yes. You can change from one AGL market contract electricity plan to another throughout the AGL Offsite Solar pilot. You must remain an AGL electricity customer throughout your AGL Offsite Solar term to continue to participate in the AGL Offsite Solar pilot.

Can I keep my existing AGL electricity plan?

You can change your AGL electricity plan as many times as you like during that time.

You can also leave AGL at any time, but please note that you will no longer be eligible to participate in the AGL Offsite Solar trial. Your subscription fee in year one is non-refundable.

You’ll enjoy the maximum benefit if you remain on the AGL Offsite Solar product for the full 7 years. We don’t recommend signing up to AGL Offsite Solar unless you intend on remaining on the product and an eligible AGL electricity plan for the full period.

At the end of the 7 years, your subscription to AGL Offsite Solar with expire, and you will stop receiving solar generation and bonus credits on your bill. Your AGL electricity plan will continue as normal.

Can I have more than one subscription?

When do I get billed?

Once AGL Offsite Solar is set up on your account, you’ll start to see your solar generation credits appear on your AGL electricity bill. In your first year you’ll also see an AGL Offsite Solar subscription fee on your electricity bill. Your subscription is charged at $1 a day for the first year of the term (total cost $365).

When do I receive my loyalty bonus?

You will receive AGL Offsite Solar loyalty bonus credits on your bill from the start of every year with the trial, excluding your first year. Your loyalty bonus is our way of saying thanks for your continued support of this innovative trial.

Will I get a separate bill for AGL Offsite Solar?

No. You’ll receive a single bill from AGL, including any credits, charges, and/or discounts for both your AGL electricity plan and AGL Offsite Solar add-on.

Can I get a generation credit on my gas bill?

No. AGL Offsite Solar generation credits can only be applied to your AGL electricity bills.

What effect does seasonality have on my solar generation credits?

Your on-bill credits reflect how much energy a physical solar system in Wagga Wagga produces, and naturally is affected by weather and seasonality.

For example, AGL Offsite Solar customers will earn more generation credits on days where Wagga Wagga is experiencing high UV levels, like sunny summer days, as these are the periods in which the offsite solar system generates more energy.

How have you calculated the estimated annual $50 solar generation credits?

In general, we have used the 10-year average estimated solar irradiance data from the Bureau of Meteorology and the industry standard solar simulation tool PVsyst or other similar methodology. Based on those tools, we estimate AGL Offsite Solar customers could receive $50 in solar generation credits. This is an estimate and naturally will be affected by weather and seasonality in Wagga Wagga – the location where the AGL Offsite Solar panels are installed.

What happens if I want to change my electricity plan?

You can switch to another AGL electricity plan that suits your needs.

If you choose to leave AGL or switch to a non-eligible electricity contract, you will no longer be subscribed to AGL Offsite Solar and will not receive any future solar generation credits.

What happens if I move?

You can take AGL Offsite Solar with you if you move! Your new property also needs to be eligible for AGL Offsite Solar. See the 'Who can get AGL Offsite Solar?' FAQ for more information.

You will need to change the electricity supply of the new property to AGL (if it isn't already) and ensure you are on an eligible market contract to continue to participate in AGL Offsite Solar.

What happens if there is a gap between when I leave my current home, and move into my next home?

There can be a gap of up to 45 days in between your move out date at one property and the move in date at another.

In the interim period, your subscription to AGL Offsite Solar will be paused. You will not pay any subscription fees or receive any solar generation credits in this period.

*Eligibility criteria apply. This offer is only available to residential AGL customers living in VIC, NSW, SA or QLD, and is subject to change or expire without notice. You must be on an AGL electricity market contract to participate. Individual solar generation credits are based on the performance of a physical offsite solar system and the amount of solar energy it generates. Potential savings will vary as a result, and will be affected by individual factors including your current energy usage, current electricity plan discounts, AGL Offsite Solar participation period, seasonality and weather conditions and events.
