Online safety for you and your family

Get helpful tips on how to protect kids online, look after your digital wellbeing and report harmful content.

Protecting children when they’re online

When using the internet, children can access undesirable or harmful content just as easily as useful content. Harmful content may include material depicting things like explicit adult material, films, computer games or other content that is classified as X 18+, R 18+ or restricted.

Use the resources below to learn how to stay safe from harmful content, supervise and control children’s online activity, and the role of the eSafety Commissioner.

Looking after your digital wellbeing

Reporting harmful online content

You have the right to complain about harmful, illegal or restricted online content. This includes content that's inappropriate for children, material that promotes offensive or abhorrent behaviour, and unsolicited electronic messages promoting these types of content.

To make a complaint you can:

  • contact the content provider
  • report online harm to the esafety Commissioner
  • contact your internet service provider.

Even if you have an unresolved complaint with the content provider, you can still complain to the eSafety Commissioner.

Report criminal activity

Visit the Crime Stoppers website, or call them on 1800 333 000. Reports can be anonymous.
