Kangaroo Valley Battery

About the project

AGL is proposing to build, operate and maintain a battery of approximately 350 megawatts (MW) and up to 1,400 megawatt-hour (MWh) capacity in Kangaroo Valley, NSW.

The location for the proposed battery is off Bendeela Road.

The battery has the potential to improve the reliability and stability of the grid. 

AGL expects the battery to provide socioeconomic outcomes including the potential benefits relating to increased employment opportunities. If approved, the project could create up to 150 jobs during the peak construction period and 3 ongoing roles once operational.  

Development status

The Kangaroo Valley Battery is early in the planning and development phase.  

AGL has submitted a Scoping Report (PDF) to the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) who have issued the Planning Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs). The SEARs can be viewed on the DPHI major projects planning portal.   

AGL is currently preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project in response to the SEARs. It is estimated the EIS will be submitted for assessment by late 2026, and the community will have the opportunity to comment and give responses to DPHI.

NSW Planning Approval Process

AGL values community input and is committed to transparent engagement throughout the planning and assessment process and therefore wanted to keep the community informed that we have lodged an Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act referral for the proposed Kangaroo Valley Battery.  The referral provides information about the proposed project and its potential impacts on matters protected under the EPBC Act.

As part of the EPBC assessment process, community members are invited to review the referral documentation and provide comments via the EPBC Public Portal. The public consultation period will run for 10 business days, up until 5^th October 2026.

3. Submit your comments on the portal via the “Make Comment” button.

Community and stakeholder feedback

AGL is actively engaging with the local community, State and Federal government, Shoalhaven City Council and Traditional Custodians in the region about the proposed project.
