AGL’s 500-megawatt Liddell Battery reaches full completion

AGL has completed commissioning of its 500-megawatt (MW) grid-scale Liddell Battery, marking another significant step toward realising plans for the Hunter Energy Hub.

The process to reach full commercial operations began in January this year and involved progressively testing battery performance and grid connectivity.

The project received official technical sign-off from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and the local Transmission Network Service Provider (TNSP), Transgrid, on 29 July 2026.

Final reliability testing was completed on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, marking practical completion of the project which will support the energy needs of Australian homes and businesses.

Working with construction partner Fluence Energy, more than 700 workers contributed to construction and commissioning of the battery.

The battery is located next to the former Liddell Power Station which closed in April 2023 after more than 50 years of operations. The station’s two chimney stacks were demolished in May 2026.

Matthew Currie, Chief Operations and Construction Officer said, "The 500-megawatt (MW) Liddell Battery reaching practical completion following final reliability testing is a major milestone for AGL and the Hunter.

“On the site of a former coal-fired power station, we’re operating one of Australia’s largest grid-scale batteries which is storing and dispatching energy to help support the needs of homes and businesses.

“The Liddell Battery is the first major development at the former thermal power station site and an important step in AGL’s plans to transform Liddell as part of the Hunter Energy Hub.”

AGL’s vision is to transform the site as part of the Hunter Energy Hub, supporting new jobs, regional growth and long-term economic development.

Potential future opportunities under consideration include advanced manufacturing, materials recovery and recycling, low carbon fuels, data centres and other energy intensive industries, co-located with grid-scale batteries.

The Liddell Battery joins AGL’s growing portfolio of grid-scale batteries, including the 250 MW Torrens Island Battery and the 50 MW Broken Hill Battery. Construction is also underway on AGL’s 500 MW Tomago Battery.
