AGL safely demolishes Liddell Power Station stacks, demonstrating progress on its corporate strategy and its vision for the Hunter Energy Hub

AGL has marked a significant milestone in the company’s history and a key moment in Australia’s energy transition with the successful and safe demolition of the Liddell Power Station stacks. This milestone demonstrates that AGL is delivering on its strategy through the successful closure of one of its thermal power stations.
The Liddell Power Station stacks were successfully demolished in partnership with CMA Contracting. The demolition involved highly controlled, precision-engineered blast, with hundreds of individual charges placed into pre-drilled holes to carefully weaken the base of each 169-metre-high chimney. Explosives were used to remove a section at the base, allowing each stack to fall in a planned direction, with the event carried out as a single, tightly sequenced blast using millisecond delays to control how the structures collapsed.
“Liddell Power Station has played an important role in Australia’s energy system. The demolition will pave the way for the continued transformation of the site. AGL’s vision is to transform the site into a Hunter Energy Hub that will support new jobs, regional growth and long-term economic development,” said AGL Chief Operations and Construction Officer, Matthew Currie.
As part of AGL’s strategy and Climate Transition Action Plan, the company’s vision is to transition its thermal power station sites, including Liddell, into Integrated Energy Hubs. The hubs will seek to leverage the sites’ land, water, transport access, and grid connectivity with the aim of creating hubs that integrate industries.
“We know that the Liddell Power Station holds deep significance for the local community, employees and families, who worked at or were connected to the site. The demolition was not just a technical event, but an opportunity to acknowledge its important legacy,” said Currie.
Safety was AGL’s highest priority for this demolition project. AGL worked closely with its partners and authorities on safety measures for the community, the team and environment.
“We would like to thank the community for their support and cooperation,” said Currie.
