Environment Protection Reform Consultation: subordinate legislation

AGL supports the Environment Protection Reform package and measures to improve clarity, consistency and reduce duplication in environmental approvals, including stronger alignment with National Environmental Standards and greater reliance on accredited state and territory processes to enable a more efficient single‑pathway assessment. It endorses new decision‑making tools such as Protection Statements, Rulings and unacceptable impact thresholds to enhance upfront certainty and environmental outcomes, while emphasising that implementation will require clear criteria, transparent evidence bases and consistent guidance to minimise uncertainty. AGL also supports practical flexibilities—such as minor works pathways and reconsideration mechanisms—alongside improved oversight, streamlined bilateral arrangements and integration of emissions considerations, and highlights the importance of balancing upfront certainty with flexible, workable processes to deliver both robust environmental protection and efficient project approvals for the energy transition.
