AGL supports the ‘first principles’ approach taken by DCCEEW to consider CER device requirements. As the energy mix changes, many energy consumers will change too. Diverse customer preferences will drive the need for a broad suite of products and services. Interoperability requirements – and if necessary, the associated interoperability standards – will need to be able to meet consumer needs and preferences as a first principle. They should support scalability, industry innovation, and competition.
Better interoperability offers the opportunity for improved product choice and customer experience. However, cost-effective, scalable and flexible interoperability solutions can be developed without adoption of standardised communications pathways – for example, via Application Programming Interface integration. Where standardisation is sought, Australia should seek to align with international requirements in first instance.
