Camden Gas Project leak detection and repair reports published

AGL Energy Limited (AGL) today published its 2014 and 2015 Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) program reports for the Camden Gas Project, covering thousands of natural gas well and processing facility components.

The reports, required under AGL’s Environment Protection Licence (EPL), follow comprehensive, independent testing with highly sensitive gas detectors.

AGL’s Head of Gas Operations, Col Duck, said the LDAR program complemented the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) own gas well inspection program.

“The Camden Gas Project has been operating safely since 2001 with 96 operational wells. Natural gas is non-toxic,” he said.

“The testing program uses the US Environment Protection Agency’s ‘Method 21’ for leak detection, where the detector probe is placed at or on the component being tested. This can find leaks that are otherwise undetectable if the probe is moved just a few centimetres away,” Mr Duck said.

The EPA classifies gas leaks as Minor (1,000 – <10,000 parts per million by volume (ppmv)), Major (>=10,000 – 50,000 ppmv) and Significant (>50,000 ppmv) and sets repair times ranging from one to 14 days.

The 2014 report identified 11 leaks across more than 10,000 gas well components and 17 in the processing facility. In 2015, 30 leaks (none ‘Significant’) were identified across 14,000 gas well components and 10 at the gas plant across more than 6000 components. All were repaired on the same day or within the EPA’s required timeframe.

“The EPA has never considered that any of AGL’s leaks, even at the highest levels detected, cause harm to the environment, or the health or safety of human beings,” Mr Duck said.
