What to expect when moving to a new suburb, town or city

Are you ready for your big move? Whether it’s near or far, we’ll share a few tips to make planning ahead easier.

Moving home looks different for all of us – from moving into your new forever home or downsizing, to moving two doors down or swapping the city for a laid-back small town by the sea.  And while we can’t help you shift furniture or clean the house, we can show you how to help make your move as smooth as possible when it comes to getting your telco and energy services set up.

Planning ahead

Depending on your service provider, you might need to select new plans for your internet and energy services.

The costs of your new energy plan may differ from your current one, as different prices apply to different addresses. For example, if your new home has solar, you may not pay the same rate of feed-in tariffs as the previous owners, because these often depend on the new area’s local energy distribution network

We recommend organising your new energy plan a week before your move. If you’re moving to a rural area, we suggest leaving some extra time, as there may be delays in connecting your energy and reading your meter.

At AGL, our Power On Guarantee makes sure your home has power on move in day or we’ll cover related expenses of up to $500 a day until your home has the lights on. We just need one business day's notice, safe and clear meter access and for site safety requirements to be met.

And if you want a great deal, bundle your AGL energy with one of our internet plans. We can help you pick the right plan and if needed, help you to arrange a new modem for your home. You can estimate new costs and explore your new plan options for energy and internet online before booking your move through our website.

For internet plans, connection times may vary, so make sure you organise your new internet plan at least two to four weeks before your move.

Take the modem, leave the nbn® connection box

Though your modem and nbn® connection box work hand in hand, sometimes even the best partnerships must break up. No matter where you’re moving, you cannot take the nbn  connection box with you – it must stay at your old property. This is because each nbn connection box is linked to a specific residence when installed. That means it won’t work at your new home.

If you get to your new home and there’s no nbn connection box, call your internet provider to see if you can get a connection box installed. If you sign up for our nbn plan, we’ll organise an nbn appointment with a technician to visit your property and install a connection box. On the day of installation, you’ll just have to make sure someone over the age of 18 years old is on the property.

New number, who’s this?

If you have a home phone service linked with your nbn plan, you may be able to transfer your phone number to your new property along with your nbn plan.

If you’re moving to a new state, we recommend you change your number. Holding onto your old number will mean keeping your previous area code – and you may be charged extra for calling someone in the same state as you.
