5 reasons to invest in a solar battery bundle

A solar and battery bundle is a big step forward in your home electrification journey, which could lead to lowering both energy bills and the carbon footprint of your household.

With Australians installing about 300,000 rooftop systems a year, 1 in 3 Aussie homes now have rooftop solar (that’s over 4 million!). According to the Clean Energy Council, solar saves the average Australian household around $1500 a year in energy costs – and adding a battery almost doubles the savings. With that in mind, it might be time to consider investing in a solar battery bundle.

Whether you want to save money on your energy bills or become a more environmentally conscious consumer, a solar and battery bundle is a big step forward in your home electrification journey.  If you’ve already got rooftop solar or are considering it, here are five reasons why including a battery could help make your investment even more worthwhile.

1. Cost saving

As cost-of-living pressures rise, generating power from the sun is a smart way to help reduce your power bills. It’s many people’s main motivator for considering solar, which makes sense. But if you aren’t home much during the day to use solar power in real time, a battery will store that precious energy for use when the sun goes down or when power prices are higher.

The Clean Energy Council estimates households could expect annual bill savings of $900-1,000 with non-orchestrated batteries and $1,150-1,500 with orchestrated batteries (like AGL’s Virtual Power Plant or VPP). There are of course the up-front costs associated with purchasing solar and a battery which need to be considered as well.

2. Energy independence

Some solar users are motivated by having more control over their energy generation and not being solely reliant on their provider. It’s true that your solar system gives you more options during the day, but without a battery, you’re more dependent on the grid at other times. With a battery, you can use your own power at night or when it’s cloudy, relying on grid power only when you really need it.

3. Kinder to the environment

People who are passionate about protecting the environment are usually big fans of finding ways to generate power that is gentler on the planet. And this is one of the benefits of a solar and battery bundle, as well as full home electrification. Rooftop solar is a renewable clean energy technology that, according to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, can significantly reduce your household greenhouse gas emissions. By adding a battery, you’re harnessing that energy to use later, instead of tapping into the grid.

4. Backup protection & supporting the grid

Some people want to use their solar system as backup protection if the grid goes down. But if a blackout happens at night, the only way this will work is with a battery. You could also help ease pressure on the grid with a solar battery, by holding onto power when the grid is in oversupply and discharging it into the grid during peak demand times (if you don’t need it yourself). Offering backup protection to others in your community is one of the cool things about a VPP – a network of solar batteries that work together when the grid needs extra energy. By drawing a limited amount of energy from each battery, the VPP creates a large pool of energy that can be shared. Joining our VPP could also get you battery discounts and ongoing bill credits.

5. Better energy monitoring

And for those of us who love a good app, solar batteries offer up-to-date technology when it comes to monitoring energy usage. There’s no guessing how much energy you’re using, if your solar can keep up and what level your battery is at. This data can help you understand your energy consumption and what appliances you should run during the day, to help limit consumption at night and maximise that precious saved energy in the battery.

If it’s one of these reasons or a combination that motivates you to consider a solar and battery bundle, we offer a variety of bundle options. And if you’re thinking about making other changes at home our electrification calculator is a great way to calculate the potential savings.

Our team of experts can review your energy usage and recommend the bundle that’s most suited to your household, talking about future energy needs (like an EV perhaps?) and finance options that help make things more affordable.
