How winning an AGL competition helped Scott get into an electric vehicle

When Scott walked into the Melbourne Everything Electric event, he expected a day of research. He went to explore the latest innovations in electrification and sustainable living. What he didn’t expect, was that a single competition entry at the AGL stand would set him on a new path.

A First Drive That Changed Everything

Despite covering green technology as Editor in Chief of Future Now Green News, Scott had never driven an electric vehicle before the event. His first experience was a supervised Full Self Drive session in a Tesla - a moment he describes as both nervewracking and exhilarating.

“Handing over control to the car was wild,” he laughs. “But the technology blew me away. And seeing the range of EVs on display, especially the new models coming into Australia, made me realise how far the industry has come.”

That spark of interest would soon become a fullblown shift.

“I was fascinated by the AGL display,” he says. “Electrifying Australian homes is such an exciting space and discovering that AGL offered an EV subscription service really caught my attention."

A Prize That Arrived at the Perfect Time

Just weeks earlier, Scott’s petrol car had suffered a major engine failure. Repairing it would have cost more than $25,000. He was temporarily driving his father’s diesel ute and feeling the pressure to find a longterm solution.

Then came the call: he’d won AGL’s “Go All Electric” competition and a $5,000 voucher he could use toward solar, induction appliances or an EV subscription.

“It felt like the universe was looking after me,” he says. “Choosing the EV subscription was a no brainer.”

He selected a Tesla Model Y and hasn’t looked back.

A Seamless Start with an AGL EV Subscription

From delivery to setup, Scott describes the experience as effortless.

“The AGL team communicated clearly, the car arrived at my door, and everything was included: servicing, insurance, rego, support. It gave me instant peace of mind.”

The first few hours behind the wheel were an adjustment, but a fun one.

“It was like getting a new toy. The regenerative braking took a moment to get used to, but once it clicks, it’s brilliant. And the tech! The touchscreen, the interface, the simplicity, it’s next level.”

A Lifestyle Upgrade with Real Savings

Switching to an EV has reshaped Scott’s daily routine in all the right ways.

“Going to a service station is a thing of the past,” he says. “I trickle charge overnight on offpeak rates, and even a fast charge only costs around $30. I used to spend over $120 a week on diesel.”

He estimates he’s saving at least $70 a week, more than $4,000 a year. The convenience has been just as impactful.

“I love being able to precool the car from the app, listen to podcasts easily, use voice commands, and even switch on Dog Mode for my Labradoodle, Missy. It’s all so intuitive.”

Longer trips simply require a little planning. “On a drive to Echuca, I had to make it to Heathcote with 8% battery left. Bit of range anxiety, but I made it. It’s all part of learning the rhythm of EV life.”

Moments That Make You Smile

Scott has already collected a few memorable EV stories.

“A P-plater tried to drag race me at the lights. The Tesla went from 0 to 60 in a flash,” he laughs. “And my parents think the car is from outer space.”

His partner Dee is equally enthusiastic and often behind the wheel herself.

“Don’t get caught up in the myths. The technology is improving constantly - better batteries, better range, faster charging, more brands, better prices. And if you’re not ready to buy, just subscribe through AGL.”

Looking Ahead: A Confident EV Future

Scott says the experience has completely reshaped how he thinks about owning an EV.

“It’s such a smart way to try before you buy. I’d absolutely recommend an EV subscription, especially for businesses. It’s stressfree, everything’s covered, and you can upgrade or switch models later.”

Winning the competition still feels surreal. “It was magical. I was due for some good luck.

His advice for anyone considering the switch?

“Don’t get caught up in the myths. The technology is improving constantly - better batteries, better range, faster charging, more brands, better prices. And if you’re not ready to buy, just subscribe through AGL.”
