Smart Meters - Electricity Distributor

In Victoria, 2.2 million homes and 300,000 businesses will have their electricity meters replaced. This is a joint Victorian Government and industry initiative. It means that at some point between now and the end of 2013, each older type of electricity meter in Victoria will be replaced with a ‘Smart Meter’.

What will the Smart Meter mean for me?

Once your new Smart Meter is installed and the infrastructure is in place, it could give you benefits in the long term. You may be able to:

  • Monitor your electricity usage in real time. This could potentially help you make savings on your electricity bill – and possibly also reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Connect and disconnect more easily when you move;
  • Help avoid estimated bills as meters will be read remotely; or,
  • Have more flexible billing and more pricing options in the future.

We have provided you with additional information on your bill that is enabled by your Smart Meter. You can find out more about this here.

How do I know when the replacement will take place?

Smart Meter installations will take place between September 2009 and December 2013. When your meter actually changes depends on who your electricity distributor (the company that manages the pole, wires and meters in your area) is and when they get to your area. You can find out who your electricity distributor is by using the Distributor Search Tool.

For questions regarding the installation of your Smart Meter, please contact your electricity distributor:
