Abatement

Welcome to AGL > The Environment > Climate change > Abatement

We have provided carbon offsets to both public and private sector organisations across Australia since 2002, and have a substantial pipeline of abatement projects, existing and new.

Methane created by landfills and sewage treatment plants has a global warming potential of 21 (that is, one tonne of methane is equivalent to 21 tonnes of carbon dioxide). By flaring landfill gas and converting it to carbon dioxide, the environmental impact of waste gas can be significantly reduced. Where possible, AGL installs electricity generators that use the waste gas as a fuel. Electricity produced in this way actually reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Landfill gas flaring facilities

City of Whittlesea landfill gas extraction and flaring (Victoria) - AGL built, owns and operates a landfill gas extraction and combustion system at South Morang, Victoria under an agreement with the City of Whittlesea Council. The system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 7,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent a year.

Wagga Wagga landfill gas extraction (New South Wales) - AGL built, owns and operates a landfill gas extraction and combustion system at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. Similar to the South Morang system, the landfill gas is captured and flared. The system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by about 9000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year.
