Keeping our people safe and protecting the environment is essential to the way we do business at AGL.
AGL is committed to:
- Having every person go home from work at least as healthy as when they came
- Considering contractor health and safety as important as that of our employees
- Encouraging personal responsibility for health, safety and environment (HSE) behaviours
- Building a culture of continuous improvement, openness and ownership
- Having simple systems that enable knowledge, spot trends and identify root causes
- Improving our HSE performance consistent with improving the long-term sustainability of the business
Life Guard
AGL has a health, safety and environmental management system that applies equally to all parts of the business, including Australia and Chile.
The system is called Life Guard and is based on the requirements of environmental international standard, ISO14001and the Australian standard for safety management systems, AS4804.
The Life Guard system requires that every employee, including leaders and contractors, understand AGL's health, safety and environmental standards and any legislation that relates to employee safety.
Life Guard is the framework for managing AGL's HSE performance and the wellbeing of our employees and contractors. It has been developed to establish and document a framework of requirements, policies, standards, compliance guides and management practices. The Life Guard system provides for consistent and continuous improvement in health, safety and environment performance and to ensure legal compliance.
Safety performance
Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policies, standards and processes are an intrinsic part of our people management strategies and include:
- Leadership and Commitment
- Responsibility and Authority
- Hazard and Risk Management
- Incident Reporting
- Investigation and Management
- Facilities and the Working Environment
HSE performance has been a key factor in AGL's business for many years and injuries have been reduced significantly since the implementation of the Life Guard system. AGL has developed the "Beyond the Plateau" model to assist in managing HSE in the business. The model has four cornerstones: Leadership, Systematic Approach, Active HSE Culture, and Workplaces Equipment. AGL believes that when all four cornerstones are working together in harmony, the company can achieve its ultimate goal of zero injuries.
AGL's HSE focus is now on leadership and an active HSE culture - the company's systematic approach and workplaces and equipment are well developed. This focus will assist AGL in protecting people and minimising harm to the environment.
