Renewable Energy Production

Welcome to AGL > The Environment > Renewable Energy Production

Our investments in low-emission generation and renewable energy help to reduce the greenhouse intensity of our generation portfolio.

Renewable energy – generation & purchasing

AGL has the largest fleet of privately owned renewable generation in Australia. Around one quarter of our generation assets produce no greenhouse gas emissions. We generate electricity from a number of renewable energy sources, including wind, hydro, solar and landfill gas.

In addition, AGL purchases renewable energy from a number of renewable energy generators, through power purchase contracts. By purchasing renewable electricity we are able to reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of electricity supplied to consumers and comply with legislated schemes such as the NSW Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme and the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target.

Renewable energy off-take agreements

  • AGL has a 100% off-take agreement with the Canunda Wind Farm in South Australia. The Canunda Wind Farm has an installed capacity of 46MW across 23 turbines. For more information, visit the Canunda Wind Farm website.
  • AGL has an off-take agreement with Starfish Hill Wind Farm in South Australia. The Starfish Hill Wind Farm has an installation capacity of 34.5MW across 23 turbines. For more information, visit the Starfish Hill website.
  • AGL has a majority offtake of RECs from the Walkaway Wind Farm in Western Australia. The Walkaway Wind Farm has an installed capacity of 89.1MW across 54 turbines.

AGL continues open dialogue with providers of leading edge renewable energy technologies such as solar, thermal, photovoltaic, geothermal and ocean current technologies.

Gas

AGL believes that new gas-fired generation has the potential to lower Australia's greenhouse gas emissions significantly. Combined cycle gas generators emit around half the greenhouse gas emissions than coal-fired technology. Security of gas supply is important to the development of less greenhouse intesive gas-fired electricity generation.

AGL has:

  • a 10% interest in the PNG Upstream Gas Project
  • a 50% interest in the Camden Gas Project and associated coal seam methane exploration licences in the Sydney Basin, and
  • a 50% interest in the Moranbah Gas Project in Queensland, one of the largest producing coal seam methane projects in Australia.

Cogeneration

AGL has a number of cogeneration facilities. For more information, see the Energy Sources section of our website.
