One of Australia’s most successful wildlife rescue programs has achieved a milestone with the celebration of its 10th anniversary.
Started by passionate campaigner and 2007 Pride of Australia finalist, Aaron Machado, Project Dolphin Safe and its sister initiative, SA Seabird Rescue, have been providing care and rehabilitation for injured fauna since 1998.
Project Dolphin Safe and the SA Seabird Rescue program are proudly supported by AGL Energy and its employees through the company’s Employee Giving initiative. AGL’s Employee Giving has donated more than $1.1 million to 18 different causes.
Brian Jones, Head of AGL’s Torrens Island Power Station, said that Employee Giving allows AGL people to support their chosen causes through regular or one-off donations made through their pre-tax salary, and then matched dollar for dollar by AGL.
“Port Adelaide is a very sensitive and valuable environment and AGL recognises this and its role as a strong and active contributor to the local community,” Mr Jones said.
“AGL employees volunteer their time to be involved in these tremendous community-based efforts to look after injured fauna. AGL helps by donating the land for the Seabird Rescue facility, the building and helping to meet some of the running costs.
“Being closely involved with Project Dolphin Safe and SA Seabird Rescue and its unique efforts to protect local wildlife is part of AGL's commitment to connect our business and employees with the community in ways which make a genuine contribution.”
SA Seabird Rescue is a seabird rehabilitation facility, housed on donated land within the AGL Torrens Island Power Station in Port Adelaide. SA Seabird Rescue provides rehabilitation respite for injured sea and shore birds rescued from the surrounding Port River and broader South Australian waterways, via a purpose-constructed facility of cages, ponds and enclosures.
Located on the edge of a lagoon, the rehabilitation centre allows in jured birds to remain close to their natural habitat, while receiving the medical attention they need to make a full recovery. AGL provides dedicated land for the rescue service as well as some ongoing funding for the project.
