AGL Energy Limited (AGL) has been awarded two Green Globe Awards at the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change Annual Green Globe Awards.

The annual awards, which honour environmental excellence in the sustainable use of natural resources and climate change leadership in NSW, this week were presented for the 11th time at a gala ceremony hosted by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, the Hon. Frank Sartor, at NSW Parliament House.

AGL won the Business Sustainability Award, which recognised AGL’s performance in relation to overall sustainability, as well as the award for Climate Change leadership, which recognised the leading role AGL has played over the past few years in relation to climate change leadership. AGL’s Manager Sustainability Strategy Cathlin Thurbon was a finalist in the category of Sustainability Champion.

On the NSW Government’s Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water website, the department notes of AGL’s Business Sustainability Award: “Between 2007/08 and 2008/09 AGL Energy reduced the greenhouse gas emissions from their own operations by 18%. AGL Energy has been recognised as a global leader in sustainability and carbon disclosure and last year was included on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.”

The department said of AGL’s Climate Change Leadership: “AGL Energy has made ground breaking contributions to climate change leadership in recent years and is Australia's largest retailer of new renewable energy. AGL is recognised as a global leader in sustainability and carbon disclosure. They have demonstrated a commitment to climate change leadership. AGL has also influenced climate change policy with their study - "Options for Moving Towards a Low Emission Future" now adopted by policy makers worldwide.”

AGL Head of Carbon and Sustainability Tim Nelson said: “AGL is very proud to have won these awards, which are recognised as the leading environmental awards in NSW.

“AGL has continued to expand on its reputation as Australia’s leading integrated renewable energy company in the past 12 months with a number of key achievements, including:

  • the formal opening of the Bogong hydro power station in Victoria and the Hallett 2 wind farm in South Australia;
  • AGL was the only Australian company to be named among 13 companies worldwide which make up the electric utilities section of the DJSI World;
  • AGL was announced as the renewable energy partner for desalination plants in Victoria and South Australia, as well as for Melbourne Water
  • And for the third year in a row, AGL was included on the Carbon Disclosure Project’s Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI).

“Cathlin’s achievement in being named a finalist in the Sustainability Champion category recognises her leadership in overseeing a long list of sustainability initiatives by AGL.”
