AGL named as industry leader on Carbon Disclosure Project index
08 October 2009
AGL Energy Limited (AGL) has been recognised as one of Australia’s leading companies in disclosing its risks and opportunities related to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.
For the third year in a row, AGL has been included on the Carbon Disclosure Project’s Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI). AGL was the only Australian utility to be named among the 38 Australian and New Zealand companies on the index.
“This consolidates AGL's position as Australia's leading sustainable company in the energy sector. Effective management of climate change risk is central to everything AGL does,” said Dr Paul Simshauser, AGL Chief Economist and Group Head of Corporate Affairs.
“As the stationary energy sector is responsible for almost half of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions, AGL is at the forefront of disclosure and effective strategies to maximise value in a carbon constrained future.
“As Australia's leading integrated renewable energy company, AGL understands the need to manage and adjust to the impacts of climate change on every facet of our business.”
AGL is Australia’s largest private owner, operator and developer of renewable
generation with more than $2.3 billion worth of accredited renewable projects either built or under construction and another $2 billion in the portfolio of development opportunities (with approximately 2,500MW under development consideration).
The Carbon Disclosure Project is an independent not-for-profit organisation holding the largest database of primary corporate climate change information in the world.
The CDP response request was sent to 3,700 companies globally in 2009 on behalf of 475 investors managing investment USD$55 trillion.
Earlier this year, AGL was recognised as one of the world’s leading electric utilities in sustainability performance by being named on the global Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World).
AGL was the only Australian company to be named among the 13 companies worldwide which make up the electric utilities section of the DJSI World.
AGL was also named on the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index (DJSI Asia Pacific).
