The winning consortium announced today for the Smart Grid Smart City demonstration project, led by Energy Australia, includes Australia’s leading integrated renewable energy company, AGL Energy.

As a member of the winning consortium, AGL will drive the development of innovative products, services and pricing structures to help customers better manage their energy consumption.

AGL’s role will also involve recruiting customers to take part in different trials and identifying existing barriers and possible solutions to helping customers achieve sustained changes in the way they use energy.

AGL CEO Michael Fraser said: “AGL has enjoyed a long association with the city of Newcastle and we are proud to be associated with Energy Australia as part of the winning consortium for the Smart Grid Smart City demonstration project.
“As Australia’s largest integrated renewable energy company AGL is well positioned to deliver energy efficiency solutions and products to our customers utilising smart grid technologies. This will range from in-home displays, interactive home area networks and electric vehicles to micro generation such as solar PV and ceramic fuel cells.

“This project is an exciting extension of how we already work with our customers to help them use energy more efficiently to reduce their power consumption and help look after the environment.”

The $100 million project consortium is led by Energy Australia and includes IBM Australia, GE Energy, TransGrid, Newcastle City Council and the NSW Government.
