AGL Hydro Information Centre at Bogong open for visitors during Kangaroo Hoppet
23 August 2010
The AGL Hydro Information Centre will be open during Australia’s international ski marathon, the Kangaroo Hoppet 2010 at Falls Creek, on the weekend of 28 August 2010.
As sponsors of the event for the third consecutive year, AGL Energy Limited would like to give visitors an opportunity to learn more about hydroelectric power.
AGL General Manager, Merchant Operations, Dale Blampied, said: “The Information Centre is a state of the art facility showcasing the early construction days of the Kiewa Scheme to the important role the Scheme plays today in Australia.
“The course of the Kangaroo Hoppet passes around the shores of AGL’s Rocky Valley Dam, which is used by AGL for hydroelectric power generation, so a visit to the Centre on the way to or from Falls Creek will bring to life the impressive facility which creates renewable energy from an existing water resource and enough electricity to power approximately 120,000 Victorian homes during peak summer demand,” he said.
The Centre houses engineering models, historical and geological exhibits, a water wall and a life-size educational puzzle for children. There is also a gallery wall displaying the history of the Kiewa Scheme, floor to ceiling viewing windows into the power station, computers and a 3D animation of the Bogong Power Station.
“AGL prides itself on building strong relationships with the local communities in which we work and invest. With the opening of the Bogong Power Station in November 2009 and the Information Centre in January 2010, sponsoring the Kangaroo Hoppet this year is another opportunity for us to demonstrate our support of the local community.
“As the Bogong Power Station only opened late last year, for many visitors this will be the first opportunity to see it in its completed state,” said Mr Blampied.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Kangaroo Hoppet – celebrating the 30 skiers who have participated in the event each year to date. Over 1,200 skiers from more than 20 nations are expected to take part in the marathon. The Hoppet is an important date on the area’s community calendar, and many AGL employees are supporting and taking part in the event.
