Paid workdays to do something that makes a difference

AGL provides paid workdays for employees to volunteer their time and skills to a community group or cause of their choice.

As well as delivering genuine social outcomes for the communities in which our people live and work, volunteering is making an important contribution within AGL in engaging employees, encouraging teamwork and developing leadership skills.

Every employee is able to take a day each year with additional time at the leader’s discretion, and can take the day on their own or as part of a team.

Volunteering helps those employees already involved with the community to extend their contribution, and literally opens the door for those looking for a way to get involved.

Our dedicated Energy for Life consultant helps to connect employees with volunteering experiences that provide practical support to homeless and vulnerable Australians – like hosting a sit-down Christmas dinner for Mission Australia team and their clients at Surry Hills Sydney, or a Christmas party in the park for more than 100 of Mission Australia’s disadvantaged families in Adelaide.

An electronic noticeboard helps employees to access other volunteering opportunities that suit their interests and skills. Many employees choose to give practical support to other causes, like green volunteering with Landcare, collecting at the airport for the Salvation Army, dog walking for the RSPCA or paint and fix projects for The Smith Family.

Employees are also encouraged to find ways to match their professional skills and experiences with causes that need assistance – like those in our People and Culture team that provided career coaching to a group of long term unemployed people to help them through the challenges of resumes and interviews, or our Energy Services team who gave valuable advice to Mission Australia on improving energy efficiency in their new Sydney offices.

Volunteering Snapshot - Going green with Landcare

Taking up the opportunity to move away from the balance sheets in the name of team building and supporting the environment, our Retail Finance Team recently volunteered at Melbourne’s Westgate Park, as part of the AGL Green Volunteering partnership with Landcare.

Westgate Park is a unique urban nature park under Melbourne’s Westgate Bridge. AGL groups, along with other corporate groups and the non-profit community based environmental group called "Friends of Westgate Park" are working to enhance the park's habitat by planting trees, shrubs and maintaining the land.

Tony Flude, part of the Friends Group working along side Landcare said, "Since volunteering groups like AGL came to Westgate Park, the Friends Group has been able to achieve so much more. They are a great team and we got a load done".

Volunteering Snapshot - Energy advice for Mission Australia

AGL's Energy Services team provided professional, pro-bono assistance for Mission Australia in their recent head office relocation in Sydney's CBD.

AGL’s support included providing guidance on how to work within leasing agreements to gain the best possible tenant power usage options, and working with the project’s design team to build in energy efficient options for lighting.

Mission Australia's David Pigott, General Manager Corporate Partnerships, said, "This is just one of the many ways in which AGL and their employees are helping us to save on energy usage and costs, whilst helping us reduce our overall energy footprint. Furthermore, we saved resource as we received the professional advice at no cost".
