Energy Efficiency Opportunities
The Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program is a federal government initiative to promote energy efficiency measures in businesses using large amounts of energy.
Under the EEO Act, participation in the program is mandatory for companies using more than 0.5 petajoules energy per annum. AGL participates in the EEO program because in 2008-09 AGL’s upstream gas, corporate and other activities not related to electricity generation used 0.64 PJ energy (until 1 July 2011 electricity generation was exempt from the program).
The EEO program requires companies to assess at least 80% of their trigger-year energy use in the first 5-year EEO assessment cycle. To meet this requirement, in 2011 AGL completed EEO assessments at Camden Gas Project and Hydrocarbon Extractions in NSW. The assessment outcomes are summarised in AGL’s 2011 EEO public report.
To help the electricity generation sector prepare for the extension of the EEO program to generators, AGL has partnered with the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism to undertake a trial EEO assessment at AGL Torrens Island Power Station. Results of the trial will be communicated to the energy generation sector in 2012 in an industry workshop and through follow-up capacity building materials designed to assist generators understand and meet their EEO obligations. Further information on the trial assessment can be obtained from the EEO Program Team at the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism on 1300 799 186.
