Upstream Gas is pursuing two types of storage projects: an underground reservoir located at Silver Springs, Queensland and an above ground tank near Newcastle. Storing natural gas underground or as a liquid above ground is common around the world.
In Australia, there are four underground gas storage reservoirs located at Mondarra near Perth, Moomba in the Cooper Basin, Newstead in the Surat Basin and Iona near Port Campbell in Victoria. AGL’s Silver Springs Gas Storage Project will take natural gas from pipelines, and then inject it approximately 1800 metres underground into a depleted sandstone reservoir. When it is needed, it can then be drawn out of the reservoir.
AGL’s Newcastle Gas Storage Facilty is proposed to take natural gas from the New South Wales natural gas network and its coal seam gas developments, and cool the gas to -162°C to form a liquid called Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The LNG is then injected stored in an above-ground tank. When gas is needed, the LNG can be quickly warmed up, converted back to natural gas and supplied to AGL’s customers. There is one LNG storage facility already operating in Dandenong, Victoria.
