Solar Energy

Welcome to AGL > About AGL > Energy Sources > Solar Energy

Solar energy is one of the most popular forms of renewable technology for households as it can be situated on rooftops. However, it is relatively expensive at present although costs may fall due to innovation and technological improvements.

AGL owns one large scale solar electricity generator.

Wilpena Pound

Located at Central Flinders Ranges in South Australia, the solar generator was commissioned in December 1998. The electrical capacity of the system is 0.1MW with estimated output of 100 MWh. There are 1250 modules in the solar array, each with a capacity of 80 W. The inverter is a 125kVA bi-directional inverter.

AGL owns and operates the generator and retails the electricity to the local network customers such as Wilpena Pound Resort, the Flinders Ranges National Park Headquarters (in the original Wilpena homestead and the shearing shed building), and Telstra.

It is a hybrid power station. The hybrid system can operate in a variety of modes, all under software control. These include: stand alone inverter mode, parallel source power boost mode, or battery charge mode. These modes can be controlled either manually or automatically.
